Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea, worldwide variation

Jaeger-LeCoultre revealed details about their upcoming presentation on the "Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie" (SIHH), which is scheduled to take place from 17 to 21 January. This year, people from Jaeger-LeCoultre decided to pay a tribute to one of their old but epic models: the Memovox Deep Sea.

The original watch was introduced in 1959, as the first automatic diving watch equipped with an alarm. The whole idea was inspired by Jacques Cousteau’s famous documentary film “The Silent World" (Le monde du silence) which was one of the first films to use underwater cinematography to show the ocean depths in color. This film was so impressive that huge crowds of people become interested in diving, almost over the night. Designers of Jaeger-LeCoultre had driven their inspiration from the movie and made an excellent and durable timepiece, able to accompany new drivers on their underwater adventures.

The Memovox Deep Sea was water-resistant to 100 meters (or 10 bars), and it was equipped with the acoustic signal alarm, notifying divers of when to begin their re-ascent. The original version had a round case with 39 mm in diameter. New one will be slightly wider, with 40.5 mm. All of the characteristics will remain identical. Even the protective glass is made from a convex Plexiglas, exactly alike to that which fitted the epic models. The stainless steel case is mounted on a black leather bracelet finished with steel pin buckle.

The timepiece provides following functions: hours, minutes, central seconds and an alarm. A crown positioned at 2 o’clock is used to wind and set the alarm, while another at 4 o’clock winds the movement and sets the time.

This timepiece utilizes mechanical automatic movement, Jaeger-LeCoultre Calirbe 956. The complete movement is crafted, assembled and decorated by hand. It is composed of 268 individual components, equipped with 23 jewels, and it beats with 28,800 vibrations per hour. The movement is 7.45 mm high, and it provides 45 hours of power reserve.

This watch is produced in two variations. The first variation, available in a limited series of 959 pieces, sports a black dial. This variation will be available only on the European market. The second one, available in 359 pieces, has a two-tone anthracite and black dial. The approximate US retail price will be somewhere around $11,950.
