Roald Amundsen was the first man ever to reach the South Pole. The link between these two men lies in the number of Assmann observation watches the famous explorer acquired before setting out on now historic exploration. One of the instruments he was carrying on this remarkable voyage was the superior navigational timekeeper crafted by the young Glashütte watchmaker Paul Löwe in 1907/08. The watch was used in conjunction with marine chronometers and other navigational instruments to determine precise position of the ship at the sea. Julius Assmann Observer watch

The observation watches continued to be manufactured in Glashütte until 1971. Now after more than 40 years, Glashütte Original issues a very special hand-made limited edition of 25 extraordinary “Senator Observer” watches. The Senator Observer Limited Edition 1911 – Julius Assmann is crafted in white gold and mounted on a luxurious and classic brown leather strap. The watch has a wonderful lacquered silvergrain dial, which is made from three separate layers of white lacquer applied one over the other. Dial indicates subsidiary seconds at 9 o’clock and power reserve at 3 o’clock, while the panorama date display dominates the area at 6 o’clock.

Functions of the watch are propelled by wonderfully decorated Caliber 100-14. The movement is visible from the case-back, boasting its 21-carat gold oscillating weight and the gold-plated double-G insignia of Glashütte Original’s mechanical wonders. The case-back is engraved with limited edition number while the sapphire crystal reveals the date of Amundsen’s arrival at the South Pole and its centennial anniversary: 14 Dec. 1911 – 14 Dec 2011; along with the commemorative inscription Julius Assmann – Glashütte i/SA, and “Tribute to R. Amundsen”.
