TAG Heuer Mikrogrider is another revolutionary concept from this Swiss manufacture, a watch that is able to measure events to 5/10,000th of a second precision. However, this is just a notion to start with. The watch is for now only a concept piece, still in development, and its true boundaries of precision may stretch even further before the first Mikrogrider chronograph comes to life. The new concept version was unveiled two days ago in Geneva, showcasing the brand’s success to reinvent conventions that were used for centuries for hairspring/balance wheel mechanical regulation. The fruit of their efforts is 5/10,000th of a second chronograph that beats at 1,000 Hz or 7,200,000 beats per hour.

The MIKROGIRDER is said to be the fastest mechanical regulator ever developed. This is achieved by “a coupling beam/girder and excitatory beam/girder system working with a linear oscillator that vibrates isochronously at a very small angle, as opposed to a traditional watch, which vibrates at an angle of up to 320 degrees." As a result, the new concept watch defies gravity to much greater extent, and therefore reduces isochronous error, ensuing noticeable increase in precision and performance.

The Mikrogrider chronograph is easy to read thanks to three scales, of which two are external and one positioned at 6 o’clock allowing to read 5/10,000 or 1/2,000ths of a second. The 1/100th, 1/1,000th and ½,000th (5/10,000) of a second — is displayed on a central hand, which revolves so fast around the dial that it actually completes 20 full rotations in a second. For comparision, a regular watch functions at 4hz, or only 28,800 beats per hour, but Mikgorider operates 250 times faster, achieving the astounding speed of 7,200,000 beats per hour.
The new concept could easily become a commercial piece, but we’ll see what happens in the near future. Till then, enjoy this video by TAG Heuer:
