Manufacture DeWitt was established almost 15 years ago by Jérôme de Witt, in continuation of the successful Swiss luxury watch brand Cédric Johner. This high-end watchmaker prides itself in being one of the 18 watchmaking brands that is capable of producing their own movements, and one of the four luxury brands with in-house dial makers. DeWitt watches are immediately distinguished for their avant-garde design with gear-shaped sculpted bezels modeled after the famous 24 "imperial columns." The brand offers six different product ranges, including the Academia collection, featuring open-worked dials giving a glimpse into the heart of the movements.

Dewitt Academia Sparkling Out of Time

DeWitt Academia collection welcomes a new addition this year – the Academia Sparkling Out of Time model that combines a bold design and a grand watch complication. Designed and patented by Jérôme de Witt, the company’s founder, Academia Sparkling Out of Time boasts a dial lacquered in a chocolate color tone and highlighted by tiny specks of gold. The Academia Out of Time's case is crafted in 18-carat rose gold and black rubber, and signed by two small "W" monograms on the crown and on the buckle.

The watch is housed in a round 42.5 mm diameter case and driven by an automatic DeWitt calibre indicating the hours, minutes and seconds. The mechanical self-winding movement, DW1201, beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour offering a 65-hour power reserve. The watch is equipped with two grand complications: a dead-beat seconds hand, serving as both a regulator and a seconds indicator, in the sub-counter at 4 o’clock; and a free second’s hand, DeWitt patented invention, in the display at 8 o’clock.

Symbolically, the complications represent the opposition between real time “in the form of regulator function of the dead-beat seconds hand that momentarily halts at each second, and virtual time, freely following its wild and endless course.”

Dewitt Academia Sparkling Out of Time, reference AC.OUT.004, is mounted on a brown leather strap with rose gold triple folding clasp. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters. There is no information about the price, but we know that the similar version of this model, crafted from pink gold and paired with a blue lacquered dial (the one shown in the video above), retails for 43'800 €. The DeWitt Academia Mathematical, a watch introduced at BaselWorld 2015, is DeWitt’s fourth concept watch. On the mystery watches, the movement is transmitted to the hands through an invisible wheel, which is typically made of transparent sapphire. In its modern-day variant, the mys...
