Girard-Perregaux 1966 WW.TC | SIHH 2017

Marina Milojević | 12.28.16 | 07:04 PM

On the occasion of the SIHH 2017 exhibition, the legendary 1966 collection by Girard-Perregaux welcomes its first ww.tc model. The World Wide Time Control, or "WW.TC," stands for the world timer complication, which allows the wearer to read off time in an area of the world other than home. The world time watch is similar to the GMT or dual timezone, but with one significant advantage: while GMT watch can display time at one additional selected time zone, the world timer shows the exact time for all 24 time zones at once. This practical function, which is more relevant than ever in a globalized world, is now for the first time available in the most classical collection of urban watches from Girard-Perregaux.

The Girard-Perregaux 1966 collection pays tribute to the 1960s, when the technical and timekeeping innovations established by Girard-Perregaux, namely its high frequency chronometers that ran at 36,000 beats per hour, were awarded the Neuchâtel Observatory Centenary Prize. The modern collection of the Girard-Perregaux 1966 includes many different complications that share that share the same design cues. All of them are simple and elegant, with plain, highly legible dials, and delicate leaf-shaped hands.

The world time complication, which was initially aimed at frequent travelers, is now dedicated to the modern, fully connected gentleman. This sophisticated mechanism is offered in an amazingly user-friendly version, which remains faithful to the 1966’s DNA. The watch, powered by the GP03300, is freed from both the date and the chronograph modules that were present in previous iterations of the ww.tc. A rotating 24-hour disc surrounding the chapter ring features two black/white semi-circles to make a distinction between day and night. All settings and adjustments are performed via two crowns, at 9 and 3 o’clock. The first one is used to determine the reference city at 12 o’clock, while the second one helps adjust the hours and minutes. When setting the hours and minutes, the 24-hour disc is automatically synchronized.

Powered by a Manufacture automatic movement, the watch is endowed with 46 hours of power reserve. It also rules the small seconds indicator, which appears at the 6 o’clock position. The case is topped by a slim, skillfully polished bezel, while the transparent case-back reveals a delicate mechanism. In the spirit of traditional Swiss haute horlogerie, the movement’s components have been meticulously straight-grained, chamfered, circular-grained, and adorned with Côtes de Genève.

The new Girard-Perregaux 1966 ww.tc is available in two versions: one in pink gold with a black alligator leather strap; and the other in steel. The price is yet to be announced at the SIHH 2017.
