Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600

Marina Milojević | 01.18.17 | 09:51 AM

Vacheron Constantin’s Les Cabinotiers department perpetuates the noble tradition originating from the 18th century, when prestigious clients were accustomed to placing special orders with the cabinotiers, the watchmaking artisans. The Les Cabinotiers studio creates one-of-a-kind models for the most demanding clients, and each of its creations is a project driven by the most experienced team of designers, micro*mechanical engineers, artisans, and master-watchmakers. On the occasion of the SIHH 2017 exhibition, Vacheron Constantin is presenting two exceptional new models created in its Les Cabinotiers studios: Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600, an astronomical watch with 23 complications; and Les Cabinotiers Symphonia Grande Sonnerie 1860, a watch equipped with a grande and petite sonnerie as well as a minute repeater.

Today we’ll take a closer look at Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical, a million dollar timepiece and the Maison’s most complicated wristwatch to date. Five years in the making by a single master watchmaker, the Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical features no less than 23 different functions in a caliber that measures only 8.7mm in thickness.

Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600

The extraordinary new Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical by Vacheron Constantin measures 45mm in diameter and 13.6mm in thickness. Its 18-karat gold case houses the new integrated movement assembled from no less than 514 individual parts. The assembly of 23 horological complications provides time telling in three different modes: civil, solar, and sidereal. Civil time, or mean time, is indicated in the traditional manner, while Solar time is a representation of the passage of time based on the Sun's position in the sky. Finally, sidereal time is a timekeeping system that astronomers use to locate celestial objects. Its time scale is based on the Earth's rate of rotation measured relative to the fixed stars). Each mode is driven by its own gear train, while sidereal time is read off on the back of the watch.

Among the most prominent features of this watch are a perpetual calendar with moonphase indication, tropical gear train for solar time and running equation of time, as well as tourbillon with three-week power reserve. On the front, the slate grey dial reveals 15 artfully arranged complications: Hours, minutes, perpetual calendar, day/night indication, precision moon phase, age of the moon, running equation of time, sunrise and sunset time, day and night length, seasons, solstices, equinoxes and zodiacal signs, tide level indicator, Sun-Earth-Moon conjunction, opposition and quadrature.

Vacheron Constantin Caliber 360

On the back of the watch, a second dial composed of two superimposed sapphire discs, reveals the remaining eight indications, which are mainly astronomical indications, and the tourbillon. There is a translucent sky chart of the northern hemisphere, with indication of the Milky Way, of the ecliptic and the celestial equator. The anthracite inner bezel ring shows the months of the year as well as a gauge-type power reserve indicator. A second disc, framed by a graduated scale, displays sidereal time and the four cardinal points, while an anthracite-colored sphere discloses a see-through view of the celestial map. The case-back also provides a glimpse of the tourbillon at 6 o’clock. The watch is also engraved with the inscription “piece unique” and “Les Cabinotiers” on the back dial.

Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600

The unique Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600 is powered by the exclusive Caliber 360, which runs on a three-week power reserve ensured by six barrels, coupled by three. This rare creation is issued in a limited edition of one. The watch is fitted with an alligator leather strap secured by a white gold pin buckle. The watch is presented in a luxurious box adorned with wood marquetry. -
