IWC has just unveiled its new Portofino Midsize Collection, which complements the existing Portofino range. The latest addition is aimed for watch aficionados who prefer slightly smaller and more luxurious wristwatches.
IWC’s most successful product family, the Portofino collection, is now expanded to embrace the new Portofino Midsize range, with its two automatic models, the Portofino Midsize Automatic Moon Phase and the Portofino Midsize Automatic Day & Night. IWC Portofino Midsize Automatic watches are available in seven different variants, depending on the dial colors, materials and gem-setting. Both models are housed in 37-millimeter cases and equipped with automatic mechanical movements. As announced by the brand, the Portofino Midsize collection will be launched by the end of the year.
The new Portofino collection is IWC’s response to a growing worldwide demand for gem-set watches. This subtle upgrade of the classic Portofino family is aimed at modern customers who appreciate minimalist design with a subtle touch of luxury, as well for those with more delicate wrists. In addition to the Automatic timepieces, the range also includes three new 37-millimeter models in 17 different styles: the Portofino Midsize Automatic Moon Phase (Ref. 4590), the Portofino Midsize Automatic Day & Night (Ref. 4591) and the Portofino Midsize Automatic (Ref. 4581).
The Portofino Midsize Automatic Moon Phase is inspired by the elegance of the 1950s and ’60s, and combined with a modern twist on luxury. The model is distinguished by its romantic moon phase display, located at 6 o’clock position, which evokes the stylistic codes of the original Portofino from 1984. There are five different versions of the Portofino Midsize Automatic Moon Phase available, and all of them are lit by diamonds. The central piece of the collection is certainly the one made of white gold (Ref. IW459004), which dazzles in the light of 174 pure white diamonds. In addition, the range embraces three models in red gold (Ref. IW459002/ IW459003/ IW459005) and one in stainless steel (Ref. IW459001).
For the first time ever, IWC offers a Moon Phase model on which the complete moon phase display is against a star-studded night sky. On a flagship white gold model, the beautiful complication is even more improved by the diamond-set case, which is set with 90 precious stones. The baton-style indices on the sleek black dial are also gem-set, which sums up to no less than 174 diamonds on the dial, bezel and horns.
The stainless steel model (Ref. IW459001) is fitted with a sleek white mother-of-pearl dial, as well as two red gold models (IW459002/IW459005). The third model made of red gold (Ref. IW459003) is paired with a black dial. Each of these watches is topped by a bezel set with 66 diamonds, while the colors of the dial, case, and strap have been matched to give an impression of visual harmony and balance. The white gold model arrives on a black Santoni alligator strap, while the steel model features a blue bracelet which blends nicely with the blue of the moon phase display. The red-gold models with white mother-of-pearl dials are mounted on either black Santoni alligator leather strap or a red-gold Milanaise mesh bracelet. The golden model with the black mother of pearl dial is supplied with a dark brown strap.
IWC Portofino Midsize Automatic Moonphase is powered by the mechanical self-winding movement caliber 35800, which beats at a frequency of 28,800 A/h. The movement is sealed against the ingress of water to up to 30 meters, and it provides around 42 hours of power reserve.
