For thousands of years, people looked up at the night sky to measure and keep track of time. The Egyptians have been first to develop timekeeping instruments that relied on star movements. These were alternatives to shadow clocks, which relied on the sun and were useless at night or when the weather is cloudy. The first of these instruments were aligned with Polaris, the North Pole star, and the time was measured by observing certain celestial bodies as they crossed the north-south meridian.
In 2012, Movado presents the Red Label Skymap, a sophisticated automatic piece inspired by the awe-inspiring heavenly constellations, and their historic role in the history of time telling. The watch comes with the iconic Museum dial, distinguished by a dot at 12 o’clock, symbolizing the high Sun at noon. The background is painted in black and mapped with the stars of Switzerland’s summer sky. The larger stars are coated in Super Lumi-Nova, while a small moon phase indicator, positioned at 10 o’clock, completes stellar phantasy.
According to the press release from Movado, black dial is a limited edition, but there are two more exclusive options to choose from: blue or grey dial. The movement, powering each of the variants, is self-winding Sellite calibre SW300, with Dubios-Deparz DD9234 complication. The case-back is fitted with a sapphire crystal, which serves as a see-through cover that reveals customized rotor with red Movado “M” silhouette.
This is men’s 42mm-diameter watch crafted in black PVD-finished or polished stainless steel. Movado Red Label Skymap is water resistant to 30 meters and presented on a glossy black, matte blue or matte grey alligator strap.
