German luxury watch manufacturer A. Lange & Sohne introduces the Odysseus, a watch that lays the foundation for the sixth watch family from the Glashütte-based brand. In addition to Lange 1, Saxonia, 1815, Richard Lange, and Zeitwerk, A. Lange & Sohne presents the Odysseus, a watch family endowed with a distinctive design and a newly developed moment.
The Odysseus watch is a sporty-elegant timepiece aimed for people who admire fine watchmaking, but also live active lives. For this reason, the watch is made from stainless steel, with an integrated stainless steel bracelet. This is also the first Lange watch with a water resistant-case and screw-down crown, proven to withstand a test pressure to 12 bar, which is more than enough for swimming and other water-related activities.
The three-part case is generously sized to 40.4 mm, with a height of 11,1 mm, and sculpted slightly cantilevered middle band. Its surfaces are adorned with a satin contour finish, while the edges are chamfered. The same alternating decoration is applied to the lugs and links of the stainless steel bracelet. The case also reveals two buttons for correcting the day and the date, positioned at 2 and 4 o’clock.
The three dimensional dial, painted in a dark shade of blue, reveals Lange’s traditional double-windowed outsize date, complemented by a large day of week display on the left. The distinctive Lange typography is used for both displays, with white numerals and letters set against a blue backdrop. The dial is made of brass and it features several levels with different surfaces. The notched baton appliques, just like the outer scale of the subsidiary seconds dial, are made of white gold and positioned above concentric lines. The main and subsidiary dial feature grained inner surfaces, while a beveled, argente-colored flange ring, inscribed with a minute scale, frames the dial. The number 60, at 12 o’clock, provides a pop of vibrant, red color.
The new Odysseus is endowed with A. Lange & Sohne’s new L155.1 Datomatic manufacture calibre. As the name suggests, this is an automatic movement with a date function. The 99-component mechanism features a unidirectionally winding skeletonized central rotor with a centrifugal mass in platinum. Operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement delivers around 50 hours of power reserve.
Thanks to the sapphire case-back, the wearer can admire the fine details of manually executed finishing work: a balance wheel bridge hand-engraved with a wave motif, black-rhodiumed parts of the rotor, all frame parts made of German silver. According to the Manufacture’s tradition, the entire movement is finished by hand and assembled twice. A signature screwed gold chaton secures the upper bearing jewel of the escape-wheel arbor. Finally, the stainless steel bracelet can be adjusted up to 7 millimeters, thanks to a safety deployant buckle. If required, it can also be extended by adding more links.
A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus, reference 363.179, is offered at a relatively competitive price of 28.000 € (including VAT). For more information, please visit alange-soehne.com.
