One of the most interesting astronomical watches of the year is the Girard-Perregaux Cosmos, a watch that made it to the GPHG’s list of pre-selected watches in the Calendar and Astronomy category. This poetic and highly complicated timepiece, belonging to the Bridges collection, is a stunning interpretation of the “Earth to Sky” theme.
Dominating the center of the dial are two complete globes – celestial and terrestrial. At 3 o’clock, a terrestrial globe serves as a day/night indicator, while a sky chart occupies the 9 o’clock position. The hours and minutes dial is offset to 12 o’clock, while the majestic tourbillon spins behind a blackened titanium bridge at 6 o’clock. A tinted sapphire glass serves as a backdrop for the numerous indicators. Dotted with luminescent hydroceramic particles, it remains invisible during the day, only to enliven by night offering a time-lapse view of the sky.
The sky chart, which rotates every 23 hours, 58 minutes and 4 seconds (the exact duration of the sidereal day) is laser engraved on a blue-tinted titanium globe. The sphere reveals zodiac stellar formations, the twelve constellations known for more than 2500 years. At noon, on the dial side, the celestial globe displays the constellation to which the Earth belongs, which is normally invisible and hidden by the Sun. The one that is visible at midnight is shown on the case-back side. The complete globe at 3 o’clock serves as the day and night indicator in the local time zone, while a 24-hour scale near its equator serves as a second time zone. The Earth is also made of laser engraved titanium, with hollowed oceans and raised continents.
The Cosmos case, made from bead blasted titanium, is 47mm in diameter. Its sapphire crystal serves as a glassbox, a curved piece of glass acting like an astronomical telescope. While the case appears large, it is actually 12.15 mm thick. The middle case is smooth and crown-free, so all adjustments (winding, time-setting, adjustment of the heavenly globe and that of the terrestrial globe) are performed via four tiny adjustment keys on the back of the case.
Girard-Perregaux Cosmos is powered by the manual-winding Calibre GP09320, which beats at 21,600 vph and has a power reserve of 60 hours. The rate is regulated by a tourbillon, which rotates in its black PVD titanium bridge arched over the escapement. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters and presented on a blue leather strap.
Girard-Perregaux Cosmos, reference 99292-21-651-BA6F, is available in 18-piece limited edition. The price is 295'000 CHF. For more information, please visit girard-perregaux.com.
