In 2013, on the occasion of the Maison’s 180th anniversary, Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon 3. The third generation Gyrotourbillon, with its distinguishing instantaneous digital display chronograph, now arrives in a brand new variant that puts the emphasis on the fine artistic craftsmanship. The new version harnesses the skills of the Manufacture’s Rare Handcrafts (Métiers Rares) artisans, who have used the opportunity to demonstrate the rarely seen handcraft of meteorite inlay.
The artists of the Maison have chosen to work with the Gibeon meteorite, originating from Nambia, which is an iron-nickel alloy with an octahedrite crystal structure, shaped by the cooling of the asteroid fragment in outer space over the course of billions of years before it crashed to Earth. This silvery grey material has unique, abstract geometric patterns, formed by the traversing crystal structures, and it shimmers delicately when it catches the falling light.
The meteorite is inlaid on the German silver bridges, but it also appears at the center of the hours and minutes dial, embraced by an aventurine ring with applied indexes. The chronograph display at 9 o’clock features an aventurine disk framed by a ring of white feu enamel, marked with elapsed seconds. The day and night indicator appears at 3 o’clock position. The display incorporates a 24-hour plate with two semi-circles in gold, one for the day and one for the night. The day section is painted white and adorned with hand-guilloché, hand-engraved sunrays, and an applied polished pink gold sun. The night section reveals a pink gold crescent moon and stars against a nocturnal blue background.
The openworked case-back allows the meteorite to truly take center stage. Its geometric patterns, adorning all of the plates and bridges, provide a beautiful contrast for the blued screws, ruby jewels, and hand-chamfered and hand-polished jewel countersinks. This multi-axis tourbillon features two cages, set at two different angles, and turning in opposite directions, at different speeds. Since there’s no tourbillon bridge, the cantilevered cages of Gyrotourbillon 3 appear to be suspended in space.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon 3 Meteorite is crafted from pink gold and it measures 45.5 mm in diameter, and 15.8 mm in thickness. The manual mechanical movement, Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 176, which provides around 45 hours of power reserve, powers the watch. Though it appears to be extremely delicate, this watch is actually water resistant to 50 meters.
The new Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon 3 Meteorite, reference Q5032441, is limited to 8 pieces and it comes with a price tag of 800,000 Euros. For more infirmation, please visit jaeger-lecoultre.com.
