January sees the launch of Ralph Lauren’s new- Automotive Chronograph, which will be officially unveiled at the SIHH 2015 exhibition in Geneva.

Once again, Ralph Lauren derives his inspiration from the world of luxury classic cars, and presents the original Automotive Chronograph, which is inspired by the instrument panel of its creator’s legendary 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe. Laurent’s passion for cars has often been reflected in his creations, and details from his epic 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC have already appeared in past watch and furniture collections. The new Ralph Lauren Automotive Chronograph pays another tribute to one of Laurent’s favorite cars, the champion of the last year’s Competition of Elegance of Villa d'Este, in Italy.

The Automotive Chronograph takes its design codes from beautifully balanced dashboard of the 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe. The watch face reveals the handmade wooden dial ring, between the tachymeter scale and center of the face, which is made from elm burl wood, same as the interior trim of the famous car’s cockpit. In order to reflect the same visual detail as the automobile’s dashboard, only veneers with the right concentration of knots and grains were selected individually for each watch. This means that the whole Automotive Chronograph series comprises unique watches, since there are no two veneers that look exactly the same.

The round, matte-brushed watch case is made of stainless steel, and it boasts six screws on the bezel, evoking the steering wheel of the Bugatti vehicle. The matte galvanic center of the dial reminds of the black chassis of the car, while its chronograph counters mirror the look of gauges on the dashboard. In addition to the central hour and minute functions, the watch face reveals the central seconds hand, a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock and a 12-hour counter at 9 o'clock. There is also a small date indicator, situated at 6 o’clock position, just inside the small seconds sub-counter. The time is indicated via the sword-shaped hands and Arabic numerals coated in vintage-looking beige SuperLuminova.

Ralph Lauren Automotive Chronograph is powered by the special self-winding caliber RL751A/1, which has been made by Jaeger-LeCoultre, exclusively for Ralf Lauren. The movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides around 65 hours of power reserve. The case-back is fitted with a sapphire crystal, allowing the wearer to admire the engine of the Bugatti-inspired watch.

Ralph Lauren Automotive Chronograph measures 44,8mm in diameter, and it is 12,2mm thick. The watch comes mounted on a luxurious black alligator strap with water-resistant calf leather lining. This model will be available for purchase from Spring/Summer 2015. The price is yet to be announced, while the reference number is RLR0230713.
