At BaselWorld 2016 watch and jewelry show, the house of Breguet revealed a new version of its Breguet Type XXI. This military-inspired chronograph is modeled after the historical pieces designed in the 1950's for French air and naval armies.
In its modern-day variant, the legendary Type XXI returns as a civilian version fitted with a self-winding movement. While most of the Breguet's watches are classical, elegant, high-complication, or jewelry creations, the Breguet Type XX.. series is distinctively technical, inspired by solid and technical military tools.
Breguet's family was not only involved in fine watchmaking, but also in aviation! The great-great-grandson of Abraham-Louis Breguet, founder of the Breguet workshop, was the genius behind the invention of the gyroplane, which is the forerunner of the helicopter. Louis Charles Breguet, that was his name, also developed the Breguet XIV plane in 1916. Only between 1917 and 1926, around 8,000 of these legendary aircrafts were acquired by about fifteen different countries. In the years to follow, he designed the Breguet 19 aircraft, the Breguet Deux-Ponts (Double Deck), and developed cockpit chronograph instruments and pilot’s watches. In 1935, Breguet Watch Company designed its first wrist chronographs, and in the 1950’s it began producing the Type XX model for the French army.
This year, Breitling revisits its aeronautical heritage and enriches its historical collection with a new mode – the Type XXI 3817 chronograph. The highly technical timepiece now features a distinctively vintage look, which connects it to Breguet’s roots. The smooth, masculine case is made of stainless steel, and paired with a retro-styled slate grey dial. The housing, which measures 42mm in diameter, accommodates Breguet’s self-winding movement with a flyback function – Breguet Caliber 584Q/2. The feature is one of the main characteristics of Type XX chronographs, ever since 1954.
In its latest iteration, Breitling Type XXI is significantly readjusted on the inside, now incorporating components made of silicon. In addition to the chronograph minutes and seconds counters, the functions of the watch also include a 12-hour counter, a date display at 6 o’clock, a day/night indicator, and small seconds. Thanks to the sapphire case-back, every last detail of the movement is unveiled to the wearer. This is what makes the Breguet Type XXI 3817 chronograph even more exclusive, since the sapphire case-back is a first in the history of the Type XX collection.
The movement of the Breguet Type XXI 3817 chronograph, which is mounted on 26 jewels, is adjusted in 6 positions. The movement beats at a balance frequency of 4Hz, and provides about 48 hours of power reserve. The watch is water-resistant to 100 meters, and it arrives on a brown leather strap. The new Breguet Type XXI 3817 Chronograph (ref. 3817ST/X2/3ZU) is priced at 13,500 Swiss Francs.
