Breitling presents a new multifunctional electronic chronograph fitted with an in-house analog and digital-display caliber B50.
At BaselWorld 2014, Breitling announced that it is working on a new in-house caliber, designed specifically for the new Cockpit B50, which is Breitling’s first in-house developed multifunctional quartz watch. The Cockpit B50 was finally unveiled at the Reno Air Races Championship, and now we have a chance to take a closer look at the new timepiece, envisioned as a genuine instrument for pilots. Despite of its broad range of functions, this professional timepiece is extremely user friendly and highly-legible, which makes it ideal not only for professionals but also for aviation enthusiasts, adventurers and frequent travelers.
The Cockpit B50 arrives in a sturdy and lightweight case made of titanium. There are two versions available – one in natural shade of titanium and black-coated. The highly complex, and yet easily readable watch face combines various functions provided by the exclusive new Breitling Caliber B50 a SuperQuartz movement, which is ten times more accurate than standard quartz movements. This COSC certified caliber powers the 1/100the of a second chronograph function with its split-time and flyback capabilities, features a second time zone display, a perpetual calendar, two alarms (in buzzer and vibrate mode), a lap time function and a countdown with alarm. Moreover, the B50 caliber provides a range of additional functions such as an electronic tachometer, a countdown/countup system, and an aviation-style “chrono flight” device for recording flight times and memorizing departure and arrival times.
To make this watch as easy to use as possible, Breitling has equipped it with a special control system that features function-selection via crown rotation and manipulation of two push-pieces. The watch can be used in a full “pilot” mode, or in a “sport” mode, which temporarily reduces the number of its active functions. A double press on the crown will provide a view of both screens.
Breitling Cockpit B50 brings another practical innovation to its white-on-black liquid crystal (LCD) screens, which are now equipped with a backlight system that can be triggered at a press on the crown. In addition, a special tilt function activates the backlight every time the user bends his wrist by more than 35°, which can be very useful when operating behind the wheel of a car or while controlling the airplane.
Finally, Breitling’s Cockpit B50 is equipped with an innovative miniaturized rechargeable battery system, can be re-energized via the electricity grid or through an USB port. While charging, the watch enters a standby mode, which allows it to correctly restart on demand, without any need for adjustments.
Breitling Cockpit B50 measures 46mm in diameter and it is water resistant to 100 meters. There are three different options for the dial available: Volcano black, Air Force blue, Titanium grey; as well as two options for the bracelet: rubber Diver Pro or titanium Professional.
