The famous aviation-inspired watch series, Navitimer, which is Breitling’s most popular model and the world’s oldest continuously produced chronograph, welcomes a new addition this summer.
The XL version of the classic Navitimer, measuring 46 mm in diameter, is now presented in the Blacksteel edition, distinguished by its all-black body, its two-counter dial, and a sleek black oscillating weight. A cult model that was first introduced back in 1952, now appears in a more generous diameter and all blacked-out to enhance the masculinity of its design.
The rather large case of Breitling Navitimer 46 Blacksteel is molded from satin-brushed stainless steel and coated with black-colored carbon-based treatment, most probably DLC, even though Breitling does not make any specific mention to diamond-like carbon coating.

Remaining faithful to the original Navitimer, the Blacksteel edition also features the famous circular slide rule specialized for flight calculation. The rule, also known as a “navigation computer” can be used by a pilot to quickly and precisely calculate fuel consumption, rate/time of climb/descent, flight time, distance, and average speeds.

In addition to the modern, all-black exterior, the Breitling Navitimer 46 Blacksteel edition reveals yet another distinctive feature. Instead of three silvered counters on the classic model, the dial of the Navitimer 46 Blacksteel bears two tone-on-tone counters. There is a small seconds counter at 9 o’clock position, and a chronograph 30-minute counter positioned at 3 o-clock. The dial, enlivened by red accents, is created using the par épargne method. The whole complexity of this delicate process is revealed only at a closer inspection – the dial is a solid piece of sterling silver, coated in black, while the markings and lettering are actually exposed parts of the silver base. Amazing, indeed.

Breitling Navitimer 46 Blacksteel is powered by the COSC-certified Manufacture Breitling Caliber 01 high-performance movement. The mechanism incorporates an exclusive black oscillating weight, which can be admired from the sapphire case-back. Mounted on 47 jewels, this self-winding movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and provides around 70 hours of power reserve. The watch is water resistant to 3 bars and held on a rubber Navitimer strap graced with an aircraft tire-tread pattern.

Breitling Navitimer 46 Blacksteel, reference number MB012822|BE51|252S|M20DSA.2, retails at 9'225.00 USD (indicative price, local taxes excluded).
