The house of Girard-Perregaux has recently introduced The Masters of Maps to its Chamber of Wonders Collection. The range comprises three exquisite timepieces inspired by the secrets of the world. The Chamber of Wonders reveals the amazing treasures of the world, and curiosities of all kinds, captured in miniature on the limited space of a watch dial. Each dial- from this exclusive series is hand-made by the artisans of miniatures, over a background of the most noble materials.

Girard-Perregaux The Chamber of Wonders – The Masters of Maps

The three new watches of the Chamber of Wonders series are inspired by antic geographical maps. The visions of the world, based on imaginative references and incomplete scientific information, have inspired poets, writers, scientists and explorers of the past to depict their visions of the unknown world and populate them by mythical creatures. Deriving inspiration from the past, Girard-Perregaux creates three watches, each belonging to one era of the world exploration. The Masters of Maps Collection: The Pearl of Wonders, The Terrestrial Map, and The New World.

Girard-Perregaux The Chamber of Wonders – The Masters of Maps

Girard-Perregaux The Pearl of Wonders timepiece features colorful dial inspired by the map during the first half of the fifteenth century by historian Ibn al-Wardi. The dial is made of sodalite stone, which is composed of silica-poor minerals. It has a distinctive blue shade and open crystalline structure. The dial is carved and engraved by hand, and layered with the fragmented mosaic of a papyrus, 0.25 mm thick. The map is a work of art done by a highly skilled miniature painter who, for 28 hours, reproduced the contours of the ancient map.

Girard-Perregaux The Chamber of Wonders – The Masters of Maps

Girard-Perregaux The Terrestrial Map inspired by the work of Italian Jesuit, Matteo Ricci. The dial is made of a white jade stone by 17 hours of meticulous craftsmanship of a miniature painter, using natural India ink mixed with a special binder. The décor is made of contrasting light and dark shades, remaining faithful to the original.

Girard-Perregaux The Chamber of Wonders – The Masters of Maps

Girard-Perregaux The New World “Novus Orbis” is inspired by the early days of modern cartography, and the works of a German scholar Sebastian Münster, and especially his work named Novus Orbis. This is the most colorful dial in the series, made of creative fields populated with fragments organized into a mosaic. The dial is created using the stone marquetry technique, and combining the tones of blue and pink aventurine, calcite and Canadian nephrite. It takes about 95 hours to make a single dial, which technique gives the impression that the land on the map floats.

Each watch from this series measures 40mm in diameter, and it is made of red gold. The cases accommodate mechanical automatic movement Girard-Perregaux GP03300-0060, beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The mechanism is composed of 205 components and 26 jewels, and it provides around 46 hours of power reserve. Same as all classically elegant watches of this kind, the Masters of Map timepieces are water resistant to 30 meters.

One of the most interesting astronomical watches of the year is the Girard-Perregaux Cosmos, a watch that made it to the GPHG’s list of pre-selected watches in the Calendar and Astronomy category. This poetic and highly complicated timepiece, belonging to the Bridges collection, is a stunning interpretation of the “Earth to Sky” theme. Dominating the center of the dial are two complete globes – celestial and terrestrial. At 3 o’clock, a terrestrial globe serves as a day/night indicator, while a sky chart occupies the 9 o’clock position. The ho...

BaselWorld 2017

In 2008, the house of Girard-Perregaux introduced the Constant Escapement, a major watchmaking breakthrough with a frame integrating a silicon blade thinner than a human hair. Providing constant amplitude and constant rate, the new constant-force escapement revolutionized the foundations of chronometry by ensuring that the watch will beat at a constant rate no matter how much power remains in the barrels. At this year’s BaselWorld watch and jewelry show, exactly ten years since the launch of the first Constant Escapement, that won the presti...
