Hublot introduces the Big Bang Unico Magic Gold for Geneva Days 2015
On the occasion of Geneva Days 2015, Hublot presents the Big Bang Unico Magic Gold, a watch that features the most scratch-resistant golden bezel ever produced. The term “Magic Gold” refers to Hublot’s proprietary scratch-resistant gold certified as 18 carats by the Central Office for Precious Metals Control. Gold is a dense but soft and malleable metal. Standard gold is, in fact, so soft, that one gram of it can be flattened into a very thin sheet covering almost a square meter. Traditional gold of 18-karats is typically rated at 400 Vickers in hardness, which means that it can be easily scratched or damaged. Hublot’s Magic Gold, on the other hand, is the hardest type of gold in the world. With its 1000 Vickers it can only be machined using tools made of diamond, which is the hardest known natural material.
Hublot introduced Magic Gold in November 2011. The first watches made from Magic Gold were unveiled on the occasion of the BaselWorld 2012 – the limited edition Big Bang Ferrari. This time, the famous Swiss brand presents the Big Bang Unico, which features a bezel made of Magic Gold and utilizes the Manufacture’s in-house produced chronograph movement – the Unico.

Magic Gold is produced in the Manufacture’s specialized workshop in Nyon, using a complex procedure in which a boron carbide powder is performed in molds for the case and bezel. The powder is then hardened at a very high temperature to obtain a firm but porous structure. After this, 24K gold alloyed with 3% molten liquid gold is injected under pressure and allowed to fill the ceramic pores and fuse with the material. In this version of the Big Bang, Magic Gold has been used only for the bezel, while the case is made from micro-blasted black ceramic.

The polished Magic Gold bezel is set on top of the 45.5 mm case and nicely secured with 6 H-shaped black PVD treated titanium screws. The crown and the chronograph push-pieces are made from titanium, while the case-back features a sapphire crystal that serves as a see-through window, so the wearer can see the HUB 1242 UNICO movement placed inside. This automatic flyback chronograph mechanism features a column wheel and double clutch, which are visible on the dial side. It also provides a date indication, through a gray window at 3 o’clock, and runs on about 27 hours of power reserve.

The matt black skeleton dial reveals the red colored minute track, and two satin-finished gilt counter rings (small second at 9 o'clock, and chronograph minute at 3 o’clock). The gilt plated indices are coated with black Superluminova, same as the hands. The Hublot Big Bang Unico Magic Gold is delivered on a structured ribbed black rubber bracelet with black PVD titanium deployant buckle and black ceramic inserts. Reference number 411.CM.1138.RX will be officially presented in January 2015. The price is yet to be announced.
