Ahead of Baselworld 2016, the popular Swiss watchmaker Hublot has given us a preview of its Big Bang Unico Sapphire, a unique, transparent wristwatch, cut straight from sapphire.
The house of Hublot is best known for its passion for innovation and breaking with the traditional savoir-faire. The Maison has experimented with unique, very hard materials, and even developed its own, scratch-resistant version of gold (Magic Gold). This time, Hublot turns to sapphire, a material of the remarkable hardness, the third hardest mineral, after diamond and moissanite. All high-end watches are typically fitted with a sapphire crystal, which is a transparent slice of solid sapphire that covers the dial and protects it from external shocks. This time, Hublot goes one step further with a special 500-piece collection of watches that were cut from solid sapphire, without compromising the material’s unique properties.
A transparent case, measuring 45 mm in diameter, is made of polished see-through sapphire, to reveal the in-house Unico movement. Until today, sapphire was reserved only for unique pieces or very limited collections, such as MP05 “LaFerrari” Sapphire, but, since the Maison has mastered its expertise in sapphire cutting, a bigger series of 500 pieces will be unveiled next month. The case band, bezel, and back of the Big Bang Unico Sapphire are cut from solid blocks of sapphire, and only a couple of pieces forming the backbone of the watch are made of titanium: the screws, the crown, which is over-molded with silicone, and the deployant buckle. He skeleton dial is also made from transparent resin, to disclose the wonder of the proprietary Unico HUB1242 movement and its finishes.
The HUB 1242 UNICO movement is treated with black PVD treatment. This in-house automatic flyback chronograph is equipped with a column wheel and double clutch visible on the dial side. In addition to hours, minutes, and chronograph functions, the movement also provides a date indication at 3 o’clock position. Once fully wound, it operates autonomously for up to 72 hours.
The Big Bang Unico Sapphire is water resistant to 50 meters. The watch is mounted on a matching transparent strap, which reveals the skin of the wearer and accentuates its ethereal silhouette.
