Hublot enters the National Greek Archeological Museum

Hublot's tribute to the Antikythera Mechanism movement, of which we have already reported on a number of occasions in 2011, has earned its place in Archaeological Museum of Athens alongside the remains of the original vessel.

The Antikythera Mechanism is probably the worlds most famed astronomical calculator, whose remains were discovered in Greek waters in 1901. The apparatus itself probably dates from the 2nd century BCE and it was used to measure cycles of the sun, moon and other astronomical figures.

Hublot unveiled the replica of the famous movement six months ago, in Paris, when they announced that only 4 Antikythera movements are going to be created. One of them is already on display at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris, the second is, since yesterday, in the collection of the Archaeological Museum of Athens, the third will be put up for auction to raise funds for the Archaeological Museum of Athens to conserve the original Antikythera mechanism, and the fourth one is going to be kept in Hublot's manufacture in Switzerland.

To pay a tribute to the ancient masterpiece, Hublot has created a movement mechanism in miniature – to fit within a case of a wristwatch. This piece, which is world's first watch ever to be inspired by an archaeological find, is known as Hublot Antikythera Watch. It features various exotic indications such as the calendar for the Panhellenic games , the Egyptian calendar, the position of the sun and the movement and phases of the Moon in the constellations of the Zodiac. On the back of the watch movement, there are lunar/solar astronomical cycles: Callippic, Metonic, Saros and Exeligmos.

I know that a lot of people expressed their interest in owing the Antikythera watch, but this is a unique piece and one of its kind. The miniature movement, nested in a Hublot wristwatch, is actually the one that is going to be sold on auction. The details of the auction are going to be unveiled soon, so stay tuned for more information.
