Last year, Hublot has launched the Tribute to the Antikythera Mechanism - a watch inspired by the Antikythera mechanism, developed by Ancient Greeks around 2th century BC. This intriguing archaeological finding, recovered from the Antikythera shipwreck, was so precise that it was capable of specifying the exact position of the moon, sun, and the entire sky, for the decades to come. About a year ago, this watch has earned its place in Archaeological Museum of Athens alongside the remains of the original vessel. At that time, Hublot produced only four movements, the exact miniature replicas of the original mechanism: “The first is on display at the Musée des Arts et Métiers (Museum of Arts and Crafts) in Paris, the second at the National Museum of Athens and the third is held by Hublot in recognition of the craftsmanship and ingenuity of its own engineers and watchmakers. The fourth will be sold at a unique auction in 2014.”
At this year’s BaselWorld, Hublot has presented a stunning new limited edition of no less than 20 pieces based on simplified, miniaturized variant of the original Antikythera mechanism. The new Antikythera SunMoon is propelled by 295 components and 7 different complications, while the Tribute to the Antikythera features no less than 495 parts and performs 14 functions. The new watch features only Sun and Moon indications, with both sonar and lunar calendar and an indication which shows their sidereal position. The wearer can read the time, expressed in hours and minutes, while also being able to identify the momentary phase of the moon, or even its shape, the name of the constellation behind the Moon or Sun and the time required for the Moon or Sun to pass through a constellation.
HUB9008 Manual-winding mechanical movement, powering this watch, is fitted with a flying tourbillon. It beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides 120 hours of power reserve. There are two winding crowns, one at 3 o'clock and one at 9 o'clock. The first of them is for winding and time setting while the other one scrolls through the lunisolar calendar in both directions.
