Jaquet Droz presents its BaselWorld 2015 timepiece – the Grande Seconde Deadbeat, a watch that is announced as a new tribute to the Age of Enlightenment.
Jaquet Droz’s new creation, the Grande Seconde Deadbeat, revisits a very rare complication that originates from the Age of Enlightenment. The independent seconds complication, also known as a deadbeat, enables a ticking seconds hand in a mechanical timepiece. While ticking seconds are normally seen in modern-day quartz watches, a seconds hand of a mechanical watch typically advances in linear fashion. However, during the Age of Enlightenment, watchmakers invented this rare complication to help academics to complete extremely accurate measurements, or regulate time of other timing instruments.
This year, the independent seconds complication is rediscovered by Jaquet Droz and presented with a new version of its flagship Grande Seconde model. For this occasion, the dial of the Grande Seconde has been slightly reworked. The Grande Seconde Deadbeat features a centrally-positioned seconds hand, while the retrograde date indication appears at the portion of the dial that is traditionally reserved for the off-centered seconds.
In order to combine the independent seconds, calendar, and hour and minute, Jaquet Droz had to develop a completely new, patent-pending caliber. The Jaquet Droz 2695SMR self-winding mechanical movement is equipped with a cutting-edge silicon balance-spring, which ensures the highest level of accuracy. The mechanism beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and provides around 40 hours of power reserve. It features an 18-karat red gold oscillating weight and is fitted with 34 jewels.
Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Deadbeat, reference number J008033200, is available in a limited edition that comprises 88 pieces. The watch is made of red gold, and it comes in a beautifully rounded case that measures 43mm in diameter. The watch is 13.79 mm thick, which is little above the average when evaluating case thickness according to the industry standards. The reverse side reveals a see-through sapphire crystal, as well as the individual limited serial number of each piece of the series. The Grande Seconde Deadbeat is water resistant to 30 meters, and it comes on a rolled-edge hand-made black alligator leather strap with 18-carat red gold ardillon buckle.
