The house of Jaquet Droz introduces two exceptional models inspired by the earliest creations of its founding father, Pierre Jaquet-Droz (1721-1790).
This imaginative watchmaker of the late eighteenth century was strongly influenced by the naturalist movement that was so popular amongst scientists, artists, and philosophers of the era. Fascinated by the beauty of nature, wildlife, plants and animals, Pierre Jaquet-Droz designed and built animated objects, also known as automata, to help his workshop sell watches and mechanical birds. He was also the first watchmaker to bring a singing bird on a pocket watch. In 2016, Montres Jaquet Droz honors the late genius with two exceptional models with miniature automata: the Bird Repeater and the Charming Bird.
For this exceptional creation, Jaquet Droz was awarded the Mechanical Exception prize at the 2015 Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix (Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève).
As you can see, this is the charmingly reinvented Grande Seconde model, distinguished by its emblematic multi-tier dial. The upper section of the dial is devoted to the hour and minutes display, while the bottom section reveals a singing bird underneath a domed sapphire crystal. The Charming Bird is now offered in a quite unique version, featuring a delicate mother-of-pearl dial that accentuates its refined aesthetics.
The Charming Bird model is driven by two separate mechanical apparatus, both patented and protected. The first one is the Bird Repeater, which produces the song of the tit bird by air compression. This innovative mechanism doesn’t rely on vibration. Instead, it uses three sapphire crystal tubes through which the air travels and regulates the melody according to the volume of air, and the speed of the piston. The regulator harnesses a magnetic effect in order to prevent any contact between the metallic components and to eliminate auditory interference within the watch.
The other mechanism refers to the mechanical complexity of the Charming Bird. The figure of the bird is a result of extreme miniaturization, harmonizing with the entirely hand-decorated movement and hand-painted and engraved background of the dial. The décor on delicate mother-of-pearl evokes the landscape of the Swiss countryside.

Jaquet Droz The Charming Bird is available in two versions, crafted from either 18-karat red gold (J031533200) or 18-karat white gold (J031534200). The watch measures 47mm in diameter, and each of them features its individual limited serial number engraved on the case-back. Both versions are paired with a hand-engraved and hand-painted white mother-of-pearl dial, with the black onyx center.

Jaquet Droz The Charming Bird is powered by the Jaquet Droz 615, self-winding mechanical movement with silicon balance spring and pallet horns, and platinum oscillating weight. Both versions are issued in a limited edition of 8 exemplars. The self-winding movement offers 38 hours of power reserve, and no water resistance.
