Montblanc Collection Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique Pocket Watch 110 Years Edition for SIHH 2016

Marina Milojević | 01.29.16 | 06:16 AM

The house of Montblanc has presented two unique horological creations: a limited edition of eight Montblanc Collection Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique Pocket Watches 110 Years Edition and a one-of-a-kind Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique Pocket Watch & Navigator 110 Years Edition.

Both models were unveiled a couple of days ago, at the SIHH 2016 exhibition. As explained by the Maison’s representatives, these are celebratory issues designed for the occasion of the Manufacture’s 110th birthday. The watches are inspired by historical marine chronometers, symbols of precision and performance, which guided navigators across the ocean over a century ago.

The new Montblanc Collection Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique Pocket Watch 110 Years Edition, which is available in a limited series of eight pieces, features some of the most demanding horological complications such as a tourbillon with cylindrical hairspring, a triple time zone indication, and a worldtime with both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The choice of only eight pieces is a reference to the year in which the Villeret manufacture was founded – 1858.

Its cylindrical hairspring, which accuracy over long periods of time, is a concentrically wound elastic metal wire, with equally wide individual turns, which are wound above each other. This eliminates the minor eccentricity of the center of gravity, thus refining the consistency of the balance spring’s beating. The triple time zone indication represents the local time via two 18-karat red gold hands in the center, while the home time is indicated by a Fleur-de-Lys hand that sweeps around a three- dimensional 12-hour compass rose at 12 o’clock. The worldtime is indicated using a pair of three- dimensional globes that represent the 24 time zones in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, as well as the passage of days and nights.

The three-dimensional, multi-level, 18-karat white gold dial features a tourbillon at 6 o’clock, and a piece of aventurine which gives it a dramatic background. The main plate is decorated using a traditional circular graining pattern, while the two hemispheres have been created using a combination of engraving and miniature painting. A three- dimensional 12-hour compass rose, made out of four 18-karat red gold, with hand-beveled parts, appears in the upper portion of the dial.

The watch is powered by the hand-wound one-minute tourbillon calibre MB M68.40, which beats at a frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour, and provides around 48 hours of power reserve. The movement is assembled from 281 individual components, including 91 for the tourbillon cage. The lower part of the movement is adorned with the waves motif, paying homage to the pioneering spirit of the cross-Atlantic steam ships of the early 20th century.

Everything is nestled within the 60 mm polished white gold case, which is modeled after the historical watches of the early 19th century. 60 mm polished white gold case is also a work of art with its pebble shape that is reminiscent of the refined watches of the early 19th century. Reference number 112586. The Montblanc Collection Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique Pocket Watch 110 Years Edition retails at 295,000 Swiss francs.

Earlier this year, in September, the house of Montblanc unveiled the limited edition, diamond-set ExoTourbillon Minute Chronograph Vasco da Gama wristwatch, a piece that combines two of the most prized chronometric complications: a chronograph and a patented tourbillon. For this special edition, the gorgeous Montblanc ExoTourbillon Minute Chronograph Vasco da Gama model is set with diamonds, and presented in a 44 mm-diameter white gold case.

The exceptional multi-leveled dial, staging the two complications of the timepiece, is decorated with dark blue aventurine, and embraced by 76 diamonds. The balance wheel is completely disclosed, and surrounded by a semi-precious stone that evokes a starry night. The aventurine is used for the upper portion of the dial, thus referencing the sky of the southern hemisphere that guided Vasco da Gama during his voyage. A single diamond, cut in the shape of the Montblanc insignia, shines at 12 o’clock, while the center of the dial features a blue “...
