Montblanc Star Legacy Chronographs for SIHH 2018

Marina Milojević | 12.29.17 | 05:55 PM

For the upcoming SIHH 2018, the house of Montblanc is reviving the spirit of classical watchmaking with two new chronograph models in the newly reworked Star Legacy Collection. The Montblanc Star Legacy Collection is said to be inspired by the rich legacy of a legendary Swiss manufacture Minerva, today part of Montblanc in the Richemont group. The vintage-inspired range draws upon the Minerva’s expertise in production of pocket watches that were made during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The Star Legacy Collection is now being reimagined on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. The key elements have been retained, while enhancing the level of classical finishing and the sophistication of the design.

Two new pieces of the iconic Star Legacy Collection are inspired by Minerva pocket watches, such as the Gold Hunter Calibre 19’’ from 1927. Both of them feature round, slightly curved case with horns that have steps on the sides. The onion-shaped crowns adorned with the Montblanc insignia, are evocative of the early days of the manufacture Minerva, when it started to specialize in production of watches that could be wound via the crown instead of a separate key.

The highly legible dials of the new chronographs are punctuated by bold yet refined Arabic numerals, a railway minute track featuring dots instead of lines, and a decorative filet sauté guilloché running around the circumference of the watch face.

The Montblanc Star Legacy Automatic Chronograph, reference 118514, has a silvery white dial with black Arabic numerals and blued leaf-shaped hands. The watch comes in a round 42 mm stainless steel case accommodating the automatic movement, Calibre MB 25.02. The functions of the watch include the hours, minutes, seconds and date as well as the chronograph’s indications with central hand and counters. The watch is mounted on a new blue Sfumato alligator leather strap coming from the Montblanc Pelletteria in Florence, Italy. Also available with slate grey dial and grey Sfumato alligator leather strap (reference 118515).

Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph, reference 118537, is a modern-day reworking of the Nicolas Rieussec monopusher chronograph that was launched in 2008. The model, now slightly redesigned while keeping its distinctive face, is envisioned as a tribute to the French watchmaker Nicolas Rieussec, the inventor of the inking chronograph form 1821.

In its contemporary version, Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph features a silvery white dial with off-centered hour-circle and the chronograph’s titanium turning discs. The black Arabic numerals have been slimmed down and encircled by a railway minute track. The date appears at 6 o’clock position, enhanced by blue screws and classic blued leaf shaped hands.

The Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph is crafted from stainless steel and it measures 44.8 mm across. The watch is powered by the iconic Calibre MB R200 equipped with a column-wheel mechanism and two barrels storing enough energy for 72 hours of power reserve. The watch is fitted out with two rotating vertically-aligned discs for the monopusher chronograph's 60-second and 30-minute counters that turn below a blued fixed double index like on the original device. A second time zone is displayed via a skeletonized hand on the off-centered dial.

The Montblanc Star Legacy Automatic Chronograph (ref. 118514) has a retail price of Euro 3,990, while the Star Legacy Chronograph Nicolas Rieussec (ref. 118537) has a retail price of Euro 7,450. For more information, please visit montblanc.com.

The balance wheel is completely disclosed, and surrounded by a semi-precious stone that evokes a starry night.
