The long-expected Limited Hillary Tenzing Edition Series by Rolex has just become available. This new line of watches was announced about two years ago as a project that pays a tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who were the first explorers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. This new edition may also be mentioned as Hillary Tenzing Explorer, which was the pilot-name for this project later changed to stress that there is no affiliation with Rolex and their Explorer models.
The Hillary Tenzing Edition is a true collector’s series, comprising of 88 packages each containing one of a kind silver HTE pin, a special HTE edition of the great book Everest by George Band, a leather bound map of the original 1953 expedition route to Everest, and 3 Hillary Tenzing Edition watches. The box is actually a luxurios hand-crafted wooden crate, designed in the spirit of the vintage crates used in the legendary 1953 expedition.
First in the series is the Hillary Tenzing Edition 36mm, a watch based on the original Oyster Perpetual from 1953. The watch is a tribute to the first ascent of the highest mountain by Hillary and Tenzing.

HTE 39mm and HTE 42mm
The second one is the new Explorer I, which honors Sir Ed and son Peter Hillary as the first and second generation to reach the top of Everest. This is a bit larger piece, featuring 39 millimeters in diameter.
Third one is the new Explorer II, with its 42 millimeters in diameter. The creation is inspired by the very same model worn by two mountaineers while climbing the summitof Everest.

HTE 42mm with bespoke bracelet
The asking price for this set is 28,800 EUR, or about $40,000. Even though it may seem like a lot of money, let me just remind you that Hillary Tenzing Edition number 88/88 was sold for $104,568 at Christie’s in Geneva, last year. Introducing the first Rolex Tourbillon
True Rolex aficionados often wonder why Rolex doesn’t seem to make any tourbillon watches. Despite being a globally recognized status symbol, in terms of complications Rolex doesn’t compete with haute horlogerie brands such as Breguet or Vacheron Constantin. The brand focuses on creating reliable, precise watches that pretty much resemble their original models. It seems that Rolex builds watches based on its own heritage, and tourbillon movements are simply not something that Rolex ever pioneered or tried to incorporate. However, something t...
