TAG Heuer celebrates the 50th birthday of the first sports chronograph designed specifically for professional drivers and sports-car enthusiasts – TAG Heuer Carrera. For this occasion TAG Heuer unveils the first watch fully manufactured in Carbon Matrix Composite 19g of Technology
This iconic TAG Heuer model was developed by Jack Heuer, back in 1963. The creator of the famous chronograph was also a racing enthusiast, and he know exactly what it takes to make a perfect watch for professional drivers. He designed a shock resistant watch which is easy to read even during the most intense races. His creation was also a tribute to the Carrera Panamericana Mexico Road Race, the most demanding open-road endurance competition. The first of the many Carrera chronographs was a black and white tachymeter watch, which is now prized among luxury watch collectors. In the years to come, Carrera has evolved and has taken many different forms, becoming the favorite watch among the top racecar drivers such as Jackie Ickx, Clay Regazzoni, Mario Andretti, Carlos Reutemann, Jody Scheckter, David Coulthard, Kimi Räikkönen, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Alain Prost...

The iconic model was revamped in 1996 and, in the years to come, followed by many successful re-editions: the Carrera Tachymetre and Carrera Calibre 360 from 2004; the Carrera Heritage, a full line of sporty, vintage-inspired Carreras from 2011; and the TAG Heuer Carrera Mikrogirder in 2012. This year, the brand celebrates the 50th year of the icon and unveils the next generation of Carrera chronographs while, at the same time, re-engineering one of Edouard Heuer’s greatest watchmaking innovations: the oscillating pinion of the Calibre 1887.
The new TAG Heuer Carrera Carbon Calibre 1887 Concept Chronograph weighs only 76,9 grams! This is possible thanks to the superior carbon matrix composite that is made from delicate fibers. The reinforced fabric, only 0.007mm thick, is shaped and then heated and compacted to achieve its final shape and sturdiness. This material, which is used for the case, is named Carbon Matrix Composite, and it is so lightweight that the whole housing of this watch (without the crystal and the movement) weighs only 19 grams.

The case is slightly asymmetric, borrowing its main design features from the Carrera Mikrogirder. It measures 45mm in diameter and has a black titanium carbide steel bezel. The dial shows tachymeter and pulsometer scales, while the top of the case reveals crown and the chronograph pushers. The watch is fitted with a sapphire case-back decorated with Jack Heuer’s coat of arms and signature.
Tag Heuer Carrera Carbon Calibre 1887 Concept Chronograph is TAG Heuer’s most futuristic interpretation yet of the iconic Carrera. Stay tuned for more on the 50th anniversary of the Carrera.
