At the BaselWorld 2016 trade show, TAG Heuer will reveal its Heuer-02T COSC-certified automatic chronograph with Tourbillon, the latest in the range of contemporary manufacture chronographs.
What the brand had in mind, while envisioning and creating the Carrera Heuer-02T Tourbillon, is the concept of accessible luxury, which is so dear to the Maison. The new creation is a price-limit-breaking watch, and the only COSC-certified, Swiss-made, automatic chronograph with Tourbillon that retails for under 15,000 CHF. In addition, there is a special limited edition Black Phantom version of the Carrera Heuer-02T, which is priced at 19,900 CHF. The all-black variant is issued in a limited series, comprising 250 numbered pieces.
So, how did TAG Heuer manage to create a COSC-certified tourbillon at such an extremely competitive price? According to the brand, the new movement was developed directly from the CH-80 chronograph – one of the latest versions of the Carrera, from 2014. When Jean-Claude Biver became the CEO of TAG Heuer in December 2014, one of his first decisions was to discontinue the CH-80 project. Obviously, a large number of these manufacture-developed movements were left in stock, and the brand has now modified them to interpret two of traditional watchmaking complications: the chronograph, and the whimsical tourbillon. The new TAG Heuer Calibre HEUER-02T movement is developed in TAG Heuer's Chevenez workshops.
The tourbillon complication, inspired by the Monaco V4's tourbillon, was hand-made by four watchmakers. Its central sections are made from titanium, a top section is from carbon, and it offers a power reserve of 65 hours. The balance spring is produced by the brand's Swiss partner, Atokalpa.
TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-02T is housed in a lightweight and shock-resistant titanium case with 12 modular components, which promises a range of customization possibilities, with an infinite combination of materials, colors, treatments and finishes. The case measures 45 mm in diameter, and it is water resistant to up to 100 meters. The watch is mounted on a black alligator strap sewn onto black rubber, with matching stitching.
Expressed in American Dollars, the non-limited TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-02T reference CAR5A8Y.FC6377 that will retail for $15,950, while the special Black Phantom Limited Edition, reference CAR5A8Z.FC6377, issued in 250 exemplars, will retail for $21,300.
