TAG Heuer Tribute to Muhammad Ali

Marina Milojević | 10.27.16 | 03:25 PM

On October 25th 2016, TAG Heuer and Muhammad Ali Enterprises have joined their forces to celebrate the boxing legend with a special charity event in Brooklyn, New York.

The event took place at the legendary Gleason’s Gym in DUMBO, where Muhammad Ali trained. The evening was hosted by TAG Heuer and Muhammad Ali Enterprises, with all proceeds going to The Muhammad Ali Center, a non-profit museum and cultural center in Louisville, Kentucky dedicated to the late boxer. For TAG Heuer, the event was a perfect occasion to unveil a unique commemorative timepiece, along with a pair of autographed boxing gloves that were auctioned at the event, with all proceedings going to The Muhammad Ali Center. In addition, the famous watchmaker has also presented a special collection of steel timepieces Tribute to Muhammad Ali, inspired by the historical TAG Heuer Ring-Master watch, which now rests in the TAG Heuer museum.

Tag Heuer Ringmaster

The famous Ring-Master stopwatch, that originates from 1957, featured a central minute hand with seven interchangeable rings of scale for timing various sports with readings down to 1/5th of a second.  Each of the rings featured a different scale, including one that was used for timing boxing events.

The unique piece from the special Tribute to Muhammad Ali series is made of gold, which was auctioned at the event, was presented with a pair of gloves, a commemorative medal, and certificates of authenticity. All of these items were delivered in a custom studded leather case that was made in Switzerland.

The stainless steel edition of 750 pieces, Carrera Caliber 5 Ring Master Tribute to Muhammad Ali, is fitted with opaline black dial with white luminescent numerals. The watch measures 43mm in diameter, and bears the commemorative engraving of Muhammad Ali on the back of the case. The exclusive inscription “Tribute to Muhammad Ali” also appears on the reverse side of the watch.

The watch face reveals a rotary ring with scale showing 1-15 rounds of boxing, faceted and polished hour and minute hands with luminescent indices, and Muhammad Ali’s signature at 6 o’clock. TAG Heuer’s insignia appears on top of the dial, mirrored by the date window at 6 o’clock. The watch incorporates two crowns- the one for time setting at 3 o’clock, and an additional crown at 10 o’clock for rotating an internal bezel.

A closer look at the dial reveals patterned colors on the inner bezel – a system for timing boxing events. In boxing, a player wins a match either by outscoring the opponent or by making the opponent unable of continuing the match. Bouts range from 3 to 12 rounds, each round normally lasting three minutes. Through the early 20th century, it was common for fights to have unlimited rounds, but in the 1910s and 1920s, a fifteen-round limit slowly became the standard. From the 1920s to the 1980s, world championship matches in professional boxing were scheduled for fifteen rounds, so TAG Heuer uses the dial with the traditional layout – divided into 15 chapters.

The time works by using the crown at 10 o’clock, which sets the inner bezel in motion. There are two sets of markings – one white-colored and one in red. The markings in red represent three minute rounds with a one-minute break, while the white-colored markings stand for two minute segments with a one-minute break. In this way, the wearer can time, even amateur boxing and women’s boxing events that have two minute rounds instead of three.
