At this year’s SIHH watch salon, the house of Vacheron Constantin unveiled its new FIFTYSIX Collection of elegant and masculine, retro-styled watches. The vintage-tuned, yet contemporary range, is a modern day interpretation of Vacheron Constantin’s iconic reference 6073 from 1956, which is said to be inspired by the Maltese cross.
The brand new range, which is both contemporary and deeply rooted in the Maison’s rich heritage, represents a perfect combo of modern elegance and casual refinement. The entire new range is built around the historical model from 1956, which is distinguished by its shape – its prominent lugs, each representing a single branch of Vacheron Constantin’s signature Maltese cross. While most watch models of the era were powered by manual-winding mechanisms, reference 6073 was equipped with a self-winding Calibre 1019/1. Finally, its edgy round case with a multi-sided case-back boasted a water-resistant construction.
In its modern-day variant, the legendary reference 6073, now the FIFTYSIX collection, retains its recognizable spirit, only dressed in a more fashionable attire. The design of the watch reveals numerous aesthetic nods to the Maltese cross.
Another recognizable feature is the distinctive shape of the box-type crystal, which is now made from sapphire, rather than Plexiglas or mineral glass. Same as its predecessor, the FIFTYSIX is powered by the self-winding movement, equipped with a polished and satin-brushed 22-karats openworked rotor, bearing a Maltese Cross applique and a frosted-snailed finish.
The FIFTYSIX collection is offered in both gold and steel, with hands and appliques crafted from white or rose gold. Each of the watches from this series features a sector-type dial, and a chapter ring with alternating Arabic numerals and baton-type hour-markers. The new collection debuts with three 40 mm models.
Vacheron Constantin FIFTYSIX self-winding in steel or 18-karat pink gold case, houses a new self-winding movement Calibre 1326, endowed with a 48-hour power reserve. The watch displays the hours, minutes, and central seconds, while its aperture-type date indication is equipped with a stop-seconds device. Fitted with an alligator leather strap secured by a polished half Maltese cross-shaped steel folding clasp or pin gold buckle, depending on the version.
Vacheron Constantin FIFTYSIX day-date with power reserve indicator, available in steel or 18-karat pink gold, is powered by the self-winding Calibre 2475 SC/2. The watch is equipped with a stop-seconds device, and it features day of the week indication appearing at 9 o’clock, the date at 3 o’clock and the power-reserve display at 6 o’clock. Mounted on an alligator leather strap secured by a polished half Maltese cross-shaped steel folding clasp or gold pin buckle, depending on the version.
Vacheron Constantin FIFTYSIX complete calendar with precision moon phase incorporates one of the most prized complications in watchmaking. The indications of the day of the week, date, month and moon phase are driven by a self-winding movement, Calibre 2460 QCL/1. The monochrome dial is punctuated by two rectangular apertures at 12 o’clock, respectively, showing the month and the day of the week. The date is displayed by a central gold hand, while the moon disc at 6 o’clock features a blue night sky and 18K gold moons.
The FIFTYSIX Self-Winding is priced at $11,700 in steel, and $19,400 in pink gold; the FIFTYSIX Day-Date retails for $17,400 in stainless steel, and $32,500 in pink gold; while the FIFTYSIX Complete Calendar comes with a price tag of $21,600 for the stainless steel version, and $35,800 for the one in gold. The FIFTYSIX collection by Vacheron Constantin is launching soon. For more information, please visit vacheronconstantin.com.
