On the occasion of the SIHH 2015 exhibition, and the 260th anniversary of its establishing, the house of Vacheron Constantin unveils a new collection called Harmony. The collection comprises seven new models, which are all issued in a limited edition. The models in the Harmony range are distinguished by their upbeat, contemporary design features and a new cushion-shaped case. They are fitted with new mechanical movements, which are all entirely designed, developed and produced in-house, and they all bear the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva.
The first references in the Harmony collection are dedicated to chronograph and dual-time functions, while the full mainstream collection has been announced for 2016. The central piece of the new Vacheron Constantin Harmony collection is the Ultra-Thin Grande Complication Chronograph Caliber 3500, which might not be the most sought-after model in the range, but it is certainly the most complex, and deserves to be getting the most attention from the watch aficionados. Its reinvented cushion shaped case, which is inspired by the first wrist chronographs produced by the Manufacture in the late 1920s, pays a tribute to the history of the 260-year old brand.
The Ultra-Thin Grande Complication Chronograph Caliber 3500 celebrates a complication that has been part of the Maison’s heritage ever since 1917 – the monopusher chronograph. In 2015, the chronograph is interpreted in an elegant classical manner, positioning itself as the world’s thinnest monopusher split-second chronograph. The Ultra-Thin Grande Complication Chronograph Caliber 3500 features a self-winding movement that has been researched and developed for no less than seven years. It measures only 5.20 mm in thickness and facilitates measuring and sequencing of time, as well as capturing time at a single press. The movement is made of 459 individual components, some of which are so miniscule that they measure only 3/100ths of a millimeter.
The Caliber 3500 is fitted with a peripheral oscillating weight, which is mounted ball bearings to provide a clear view of the movement. The oscillating weight, same as in all other inaugural timepieces in the Harmony line, features a scrolling motif engraving, fleurisanne engraving, which is inspired by the balance-cock on the oldest Vacheron Constintin’s pocket watch, signed by Jean-Marc Vacheron in 1755. The caliber features a number of breakthrough solutions, such as blocking of the rotor when the barrel is sufficiently wound, and thus preventing excess tension in the winding spring. The watchmakers have also used the “friction” technique for the lateral coupling clutch, to reduce any jerk of the hand when the chronograph starts running.
The watch is made of precious 950 platinum (42mm x 52 mm, 8.4 mm thick) and it features a bright, opaline silver-toned dial. The dial bears indications for the hours, minutes, small seconds at 9 o’clock, 60-minute counter at 3 o’clock, and power reserve, while a red tachometric scale appears on its very edge. The Arabic numerals are painted in blue, to match the blued chronograph hands, while the leaf-type hands indicate the hours and minutes.
Vacheron Constantin Harmony Ultra-Thin Grande Complication Chronograph, reference 5400S/000P-B057, is available only in Vacheron Constantin Boutiques. The watch is issued in a 10-piece limited, numbered edition (« N° X/10 » and « 260th Anniversary » engraved on the back of the timepiece). The watch is mounted on a blue Mississippiensis alligator leather, hand-stitched, saddle-finished, with large square scales. It comes with a dedicated 260th anniversary presentation box, together with a magnifying glass, a dedicated brochure on the Harmony product line and a 260th anniversary celebration letter signed by Mr. Juan-Carlos Torres, CEO of Vacheron Constantin.
