Vacheron Constantin Quai de l’Île in stainless steel

Marina Milojević | 04.26.16 | 11:41 PM

Vacheron Constantin Quai de l’Île collection, which was first introduced in 2008, represents a modern take on watchmaking tradition. This contemporary range of watches, certified with Hallmark of Geneva and powered by the in-house self-winding calibers, now welcomes a new stainless steel model. The new Quai de l’Île in stainless steel blends three iconic shapes from the visual tradition of the famous Swiss watchmaker. The watch is comfortably sized at 41 mm in diameter, and it utilizes the new Manufacture self-winding Caliber 5100.

The Quai de l’ile collection is named after an urban site bursting with history. Same as the Quai de l’ile urban hub, a crossing place between the left and right banks of the Rhone Quai, the Quai de l’ile collection embodies an avant-garde spirit, with long-standing watchmaking traditions of Vacheron Constantin. The Quai de l’ile s a completely new concept in fine watchmaking, which allows the customer to choose between different cases, finishes and dials, to create the customized watch of his desires.

"The historical home of Vacheron Constantin since the 19th century, the Quai de l'Ile, nestling at the heart of Geneva, is the place where the Maison has perpetuated its philosophy of individualized service, inherited from the Cabinotiers who have forged its history. In harmony with this principle, the Quai de l'Ile may be comprehensively personalized and epitomizes a modern expression of horological tradition. Customers may thus shape their own creations, born from a combination of several materials, different types of dials as well as movements bearing the Hallmark of Geneva."

The dial of the new Quai de l’Île stainless steel model features a multi-level design. It is available in two versions, either silver-toned or black, with an opaline finish. The dial is composed of three different parts, which results in an outstanding depth effect. The hour-markers and Arabic numerals are entirely made of white SuperLuminNova, while the traditional date window is replaced by a two-level date indication. The structure of the dial includes a transparent mineral glass disc on which the dates of the month are inscribed. Underneath the glass is another disc with an indicator, which points to the accurate date.

The new stainless steel case is sturdy, comfortable, and lightweight. It unites three iconic shapes from the Vacheron Constantin’s heritage: a round bezel, a cushion-type case and a tonneau (barrel) case-band. The shape-in-shape design creates an original design accentuated by interlacing play of different finishes, while the transparent case-back allows the wearer to admire the new in-house movement.

The movement used for the new Vacheron Constantin Quai de l’Île timepiece in stainless steel is the aforementioned Caliber 5100. The mechanism is assembled from 172 components and 37 jewels, and equipped with twin barrels to guarantee over 60 hours of power reserve. Beating at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement drives the hours, minutes, central seconds and date functions. The oscillating weight is made of tungsten alloy, a material rarely used in watchmaking yet, due to its hardness and weight, responsible for improved inertia of the rotor.

Vacheron Constantin Quai de l’Île

Vacheron Constantin Quai de l’Île is delivered with two straps – one in brown alligator leather and the other in black rubber. Both straps are finished with a steel folding clasp. The watch is water resistant to up to 30 meters, and it retails at € 16,400 Euro, or $ 14,900 USD. Quai de l’Île model is available in two versions: silver-toned (ref. 4500S/000A-B195) or black (ref. 4500S/000A-B196)
