On the occasion of the SIHH 2015 exhibition, Vacheron Constantin will unveil its new model from the Métiers d’Art collection - The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac, dedicated to the Year of the Goat.
Vacheron Constantin The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac collection is inspired by the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The Shēngxiào is the circle of animals that relates each year to an animal, each widely connected with a habit of assigning a person's personality or events in his or her life to its influence. The sign of the goat will mark the year of 2015, taking over from the horse on February 19th 2014. To mark this special astrological event, Vacheron Constantin presents two of its new creations, each beautifully embellished by enameling and engraving.
The Year of the Goat models are made in pink gold and platinum, and issued in two 12-piece limited edition series. Each of the watches features a magnificent dial that reveals the animal of the Chinese zodiac, which is rendered in a special artisan technique that is inspired by the Chinese art of paper-cutting, known as Jianzhi. This ancient skill is here translated into the field of watchmaking, and used as a creative example to carve hollowed patterns and create decorative images by using full and empty spaces.
As explained by Vacheron Constantin, the leaf motif that appears on the dial is borrowed from classic Chinese iconography. The leaf is engraved directly on the golden surface of the dial, while raised honeysuckle flowers appear as if they are floating over. The goat engraving emerges from the middle of the dial, expressing the amazing skill of the Manufacture’s artisans and lively details, some of which are measuring no more than a mere fraction of a millimeter. The dial is prepared using the art of Grand Feu enameling, which enhances the visual intensity of the blue or bronze-toned dials.
Platinum version of the Year of the Goat model reveals a blue dial with goat engraving in platinum, while the bronze-colored dial completes the pink gold model. Both watches measure 40mm in diameter and 12,74 in thickness, and they are powered by the mechanical self-winding Caliber 2460 G4, which is developed and manufactured by Vacheron Constantin. The movement beats at 28,800 vibrations/hour, and provides 40 hours of power reserve.
Vacheron Constantin The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Goat is delivered with a corrector pen, a magnifying glass and a dedicated brochure that further explains the craftsmanship and the technicality behind the model. The watches are mounted on either blue or brown Mississippiensis alligator leather straps, and each of them features “2015” engraving on the back of the case.
