Zenith has unveiled three new timepieces belonging to the Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane line, each honoring one of the famous historical revolutionary figures: Simón Bolívar, Ernesto “Che” Guevara and Emiliano Zapata.
Zenith Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane Revolución series comprises of three mechanical models, each featuring the three major horological discoveries: the gravity control (patented system); fusée-chain transmission; and Zenith’s epic El Primero caliber, which is distinguished by its remarkable beat of 36,000 vibrations per hour. The watches are issued in a special limited edition, which is exclusively decorated using the techniques of enameling, micro-engraving and micro-painting. Each of these exceptional watches looks the same from the front, but their case-backs are rendered in three versions paying tribute to three figures from South American revolutions.
A single glance at any of the Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane Revolución watches reveals its outstanding uniqueness, which immediately distinguishes it from the rest of the Zenith collection. The dials feature an open architecture which reveals the original mechanism: the barrel with fusée-chain transmission appearing between 10.30 and 1.30 o'clock, the gravity control gyroscopic module, and the high-frequency regulator at 6 o’clock. There are also three gold sub-counters – the hours and minutes at 12 o’clock, the small seconds at 9 o’clock and the power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock – each of them finely guillochéd, enameled, and paired with blued steel hands. The plate has been hollowed out, but five stars including Zenith’s, appear on its remaining structure. In addition, the gravity control system’s counterweight is decorated with hand-crafted micro-painting representation of the Southern hemisphere.
The Zenith Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane Revolución is available in three versions, which are distinguished by their miniature paintings found on the case-back. On the first model is a portrait of general and politician, Simón Bolívar. Above him is his sword, and to the right of the counterweight are his pistols, while the background features a man soldier on a prancing horse.

The second model reveals a portrait of Ernesto Che Guevara, wearing his famous beret. The famous revolutionary figure is depicted above the counterweight of the gyroscopic module, surrounded by his followers who are depicted showing off their guns. The details of the Cuban flag are visible on the left, while the ocean with the island of Cuba appears on the right.

The third model is dedicated to the Emiliano Zapata, and it features a bright colors and a distinctive style of Mexican artists. The case-back depicts a rider and his horse astride the gyroscopic module, and a cactus that sits opposite the portrait of the revolutionary.

On the inside, three original mechanisms are delivering a superior level of precision and accuracy. The watch features a high-frequency regulator that is able to measure times up to a tenth-of-a-second precision. The a fusée-chain transmission is used to compensate the deviations in force of the barrel as it winds down, while the patented gravity control mechanism diminishes the effects of gravity on the watch. The whole of a movement is composed of 939 individual parts - 354 for the calibre and 585 for the fusée-chain mechanism.
Zenith Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane Revolución watches are delivered in a fitting presentation box, modeled after Cuban cigar boxes. The box is made of mahogany, decorated with corner trims and an oxbone lock. The upper lid features the effigies of the three historical revolutionary figures, silkscreened onto a piece of papyrus embedded in the cover. Once the watches are removed, the case can be transformed into an excellent cigar box that is able to accommodate up to 200 cigars.
Zenith Academy Christophe Colomb Hurricane Revolución watches are based on the El Primero 8805, hand-wound movement, which provides about 50 hours of power reserve. The Simón Bolívar watch is made of 950 platinum, the Che Guevara watch is made of 18-carat pink gold, while the Emiliano Zapata watch uses 18-carat yellow gold for its case. Each of the models measures 45 mm in diameter and it is water resistant to 30 meters.
