Zenith just released a brand new model in the Captain chronograph line of watches. The new piece is dubbed Captain Winsor Annual Calendar Chronograph, and it is issued to mark the beginning of collaboration between the famous Swiss manufacture and the Musée International d’Horlogerie (MIH).
This museum dedicated to horology is located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, which historically remains one of the central places of the Swiss watchmaking industry. Honoring this renowned institution, Zenith developed the most accurate series-produced calibre and an innovative complication. The museum’s curator, Ludwig Oechslin, envisioned this useful construction: an annual calendar with an ability to display the day of the week, date and month, requiring just a single adjustment per year.
Traditionally, annual calendars are able to adjust months with 30 or 31 days, but they need to be manually adjusted each February. Even though a perpetual calendar doesn’t require adjustments until 2100, they are far more complicated and generally far more expensive than the annual calendars. Equipping a Captain Winsor Chronograph with an annual calendar is, therefore, a clever choice, as it adds a lot to the functionality of the creation and yet doesn’t affect the price too much.

The geometry of the complication provides exceptional readability by three concentric discs. The outer disc is used to indicate date, the middle is for the month, while the inner disc indicates the day of the week. According to the press release “the possibility of integrating this complication within the Zenith captain chronograph stems from an agreement between the Manufacture and the MIH, which will in return be able to set up within its premises two permanent exhibitions on the theme of hours and seconds.”

The watch is offered in two basic variations: crafted from stainless steel or from 18-carat rose gold. Both versions come in 42mm-wide case topped with a box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. The watch utilizes Zenith’s El Primero 4054, automatic movement and provides 50 hours of power reserve. Captain Winsor Annual Calendar is water resistant to 50 meters and paired with a brown alligator strap with protective rubber lining.
The Captain Winsor Annual Calendar Chronograph in stainless steel is available as of October 1 for $8700, while the rose gold variation retails at $18,800. Buying this one is definitely something worth to consider.
