The dial depicts a hot air ballon rising into the air of Zanzibar. The dial is decorated with champlevé enamel and inlaid with mother-of-pearl. In this technique troughs or cells are carved or cast into the surface of a metal object, and filled with vitreous enamel. The enamel is made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing. The careful inspection reveals that the hours and minutes are indicated by the retograde movement of the balloon’s anchor and a bird in flight.
