The Explorer watches were developed exclusively for explorers who would navigate rough terrain, such as the world famous Mount Everest expeditions. The first ever Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer II was developed in 1971, marking the new generation of Explorer watches now for the first time equipped with graduation bezel, date indication and 24-hour hand. The 24-hour display is especially useful for airplane pilots, astronauts, military, cavernous explorers, and anyone in the need to distinguish day from night. This type of watch has an hour hand that completes a revolution every 24 hours, showing the time in 24-hour format.



In 2011, Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer celebrates its 40th anniversary, and it has never been more superior than now. The case of a watch is now a bit larger, featuring 42 millimeters in diameter, and crafted in polished and satin finished stainless steel. It is powered by the brand new Rolex calibre 3187, developed and produces by the brand. This is one of the most technically advanced movements that uses the latest patented technologies of Rolex: non-magnetic blue PARACHROM hairspring and high-performance PARAFLEX shock absorbers. The movement is built on 31 jewels and allows for 48 hours of power reserve. It is sealed against ingress of water, and provides 100 meters of water resistance.



The watch is available in two basic variations: fitted with White lacquered CHROMALIGHT display, or with a Black, satin finished CHROMALIGHT display, both with long-lasting luminescence. The dial reveals an additional hand on the dial that makes it easy to display the time in multiple time zones. The independent rapid setting of the hour hand allows for quick and accurate adjustment. The watch is mounted on a bracelet equipped with a new OysterLock clasp with safety catch and the EasyLink comfort extension link.
