Ochs und Junior is relatively young watchmaking company established in 2006 by Ludwig Oechslin, a brilliant watchmaker who is best known for his legendary collaboration with Ulysse Nardin. His most notable creations are Trilogy of Time collection, GMT± Perpétuel, the Sonata and the mythical Freak. Even today, Ludwig Oechslin collaborates with Ulysse Nardin, a brand that became a strategic partner of Ochs und Junior in spring of 2012. Ulusse Nardin’s UN-118 basic caliber is expected to be used in Ochs und Junior’s upcoming projects.
Ochs und Junior timepieces are produced in small editions, and they are immediately recognizable thanks to their unique design that restrains from any alphanumeric graphics. The most recent creation from Ochs and Junior manufacture is the Moon Phase Patina watch which is crafted from titanium and brass. All dial components, including hands, are crafted from brass, while the case, crown and the buckle are made from titanium. The dial is hand-decorated using the ancient sculpture restoration technique, which results in a dark grey color. The indices, date dot, and moon are milled to reveal the contrasting shade of metal. Each Ochs und Junior Moon Phase Patina is therefore a unique piece – entirely finished by hand. Since all of the watches are custom-manufactured, the brand can produce no more than 300 watches per year. However, each of their creations is offered with a lifetime warranty.
Ochs und Junior Moon Phase Patina stands out with its simple design that provides maximum legibility. The dial reveals relative positions of the moon, sun and earth, 30+1 date perforations and only 6 indices for hour, minute and second reading. What is truly amazing about this piece is that it presents the world’s most accurate moon phase calculation in a wristwatch, built on only 5 different components. The calculation for the moon phase will be off by 1 day in 3,478.27 years, while a conventional moon phase complications deviate by one day per about 2 years, 122, 500 or 1007, depending on their level of precision. Ochs und Junior complication figures as milestone in watchmaking history thanks to rigorous mathematics and epicyclical gearing as an alternative to levers and springs.
Ochs und Junior Moon Phase Patina is another iteration of the Selene model, and it is based on ETA 2824-2. It arrives in two sizes: with 39mm or 42mm in diameter which, in its basic version comes in titanium. However, the brand offers this very same model in silver, as well. All dial components are hand-painted, and custom color options are also available online.
