ochs und junior have unveiled the new version of the world’s most minimalist annual calendar watch - Ludwig Oechslin’s Annual Calendar Brass.
A couple of months ago, I have introduced you with ochs und junior Moon Phase Patina, which offers the world's most accurate moon phase calculation in a wristwatch. This time, I’m turning to another of their owner’s fabulous inventions - Ludwig Oechslin’s annual calendar, which is a brilliantly minimalistic approach to the creation of this demanding mechanical watch complication. A typical annual calendar watch is usually built on no less than 40 individual components, but this one is brought to life using only 3 moving parts designed by Ludwig Oechslin. Same as any other watch of this type, it requires manual adjustment only once per year, for the first of March.

ochs und junior have, once again, abandoned the traditional alphanumeric display, to give a more intuitive sense for time and calendar using round apertures and rotating dots. The date, month and weekday are distinguished simply by their analog position on the dial, while the optimal hierarchy of information ensures that the first thing the wearer sees when glancing at his watch is the time, then the date, and finally the weekday and month. The three specially-designed moving parts, which animate the complication, are 5-tooth cogwheel, the month disk, and the weekday disk. You can see them pictured below:

ochs und junior Annual Calendar Brass is available in 39mm or 42mm case-diameter, crafted in titanium or in silver. All components of the dial are crafted from brass, but the brand offers custom color options as well. The moving brass components are actually embedded into the ETA 2824-2 base movement, which runs on 40-hour power reserve.

ochs und junior timepieces are produced in small editions, a maximum of 300 per year. However, this model is going to be even more unique as it uses only brass, with no added color, for its high-contrast dial. The surface of the dial is treated with hand-patination, which gives each of the exemplars its distinctive charm. All Ochs und junior creations are offered with a lifetime warranty, which covers the annual calendar function, case, dial, crown, and buckle.

ochs und junior Annual Calendar Brass in titanium sells for 8000 CHF, while the silver version retails for 10,000 CHF. The watches are exclusively sold directly to customers at the ochs und junior workspace in Lucerne and over the internet at ochsundjunior.ch
