ArtyA & Kerbedanz Led Zeppelin watch with ZoSo symbol

Marina Milojević | 09.09.15 | 06:09 AM

The house of Kerbendanz has once again joined its forces with the innovative avant gardiste Swiss watchmaker ArtyA, for a very special collaboration honoring the iconic English rock band Led Zeppelin.

ArtyA’s leading master horologer Yvan Arpa, owner of the Luxury Artpieces brand (for which he launched the brands BlackbeltWatch and ArtyA), has designed a custom Son of Sound housing for a unique dial designed by Kerbendanz. The Son of Sound collection, by ArtyA, comprises gorgeous guitar-shaped watches, decorated with hand stretched guitar strings, rock star guitar picks, metronomes, or iconic rock ’n’ roll symbols such as skulls or VIP artwork. Kerbendanz, on the other hand, is a manufacturer of unique and highly exclusive timepieces imbued with symbolical meanings. When two of these worlds collide, the new Son of Sound is born!

Led Zeppelin IV symbols

Aram Petrosyan found his inspiration in pagan symbols appearing on Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth studio album. After their 1970 album Led Zeppelin III received halfhearted reviews from critics, Page decided their fourth album would officially be untitled: "We decided that on the fourth album, we would deliberately play down the group name, and there wouldn't be any information whatsoever on the outer jacket. Names, titles and things like that do not mean a thing… I had to talk like hell to get that one done."

Instead, Robert Plant came up with an original idea that each member of the band should choose a metaphysical symbol which somehow represents him individually. Jones and Bonham followed the assignment and chose symbols appearing in the book of runes. Jones’ symbol, a circle over three interlocking ovals, represents both confident and competent person. Bonham’s symbol of three interlocking circles symbolizes the man-woman-child cycle. Plant choose a circle around a feather motif, which honors the feather of Ma'at, the Egyptian goddess of truth, balance, order, law, morality and justice. Page was the most original, as he designed his own symbol – ZoSo, which also appears as a central motif on ArtyA & Kerbedanz’s new Zepp dial. Page never really explained the meaning behind his symbol, except mentioning that it was not in fact intended to be a word at all.

ArtyA & Kerbedanz, both unconventional watchmakers, have already collaborated on similar projects. As once explained by Aram Petrosyan, owner of the Kerbedanz manufacture, both watchmakers share the same spirit of creative freedom, and they both like the same music. Earlier this year, Aram Petrosyan created his first Zepp dial for ArtyA, featuring one of the pictographs of the legendary group – the feather in the circle. The case of this watch is a transformed circle of the pictograph centered around the eagle feather motif, which is a symbol of Robert Plant. The composition also includes two other symbols - a butterfly and a rose. While the feather symbolizes courage, the butterfly stands for immortality, and the rose is a symbol of cosmic force, purity and holiness.

At that time, Petrosyan announced the launch of new collaborative projects, and now the fruits of his work with Yvan Arpa have finally been unveiled. The new ArtyA & Kerbedanz piece unique, a tribute to Led Zeppelin, features a custom-made, one-off enamel dial, decorated using the cloisonné technique. The is centered around the symbol of ZoSo, which obviously means that it must be dedicated to the legend of Jimmy Page. At the same time, the watchmakers are giving us a hint about upcoming releases, since there are two more symbols left! What else to expect, but two new Zepp-inspired dials dedicated to Jones and Bonham.

In addition to the ZoSo symbol, the dial reveals three smaller symbols, each representing one of the signs appearing on the Led Zeppelin IV. The metaphorical representations are set against the enamel dial on which the openworked symbol of a zeppelin appears. The case is made of high grade stainless steel, and it measures 42 mm in diameter. The new ArtyA & Kerbedanz Zepp watch is powered by the ArtyA in-house modified automatic Swiss movement A82. The movement provides 46 hours of power reserve, and makes the hours, minutes, and seconds functions work.

Earlier this year, the house Kerbedanz unveiled the Tourbillon A’Ghiran, an exquisite timepiece which has now been nominated for the Chronometry Competition – LeLocle 2015. The watch, which has undergone though testing since May 28, 2015, is now cited for the Tourbillon category. Each nominated timepiece is tested for over six months, in terms of precision, shock and water resistance, and magnetic interference.

The exclusive three-layer laminated rose gold dial is manufactured and decorated by Kerbedanz. It features multi-layered galvanic tre...
