Just ahead of the SIHH 2018, which opens its doors tomorrow, the house of Baume & Mercier introduces the new Clifton Baumatic, a reliable, antimagnetic chronometer endowed with a five-day power reserve. Baume & Mercier was the first of the Richemont Group brands to offer a watch with a silicone balance spring - the Clifton Manual 1830.
This year, with the Clifton Baumatic, Richemont goes one step further in using the silicon technology. The new model, which is the most technically advanced Baume & Mercier model ever produced, is equipped with a brand new movement with improved timekeeping accuracy and much longer power reserve.
The new Caliber Baumatic – BM12-1975A – is fitted out with a silicon hairspring based on the same Twinspir technology that can also be found in the Clifton Manual 1830. This development includes two separate cores of silicon linked by a silicon dioxide layer set at a 45-degree angle. The movement features a silicon escapement, another first for the Richemont, an optimized barrel for a 120-hour power reserve, and optimized lubricants.
Thanks to all of these combined features, the Baumatic promises increased accuracy in the range of -4/+6 seconds per day, as well as increased time between servicing compared to the usual industry standard of 5 years. In fact, it has been tested for up to 10 years in simulated daily use! Similarly, the use of silicone increases the caliber’s resistance to magnetic fields up to 1500 Gauss, which is 25 times more resistance than in a classic timepiece.
The COSC-certified chronometer watch is crafted from stainless steel and it features a silvery white dial. The elegant, minimalist design of the Clifton Baumatic incorporates a discreet date window at 3 o’clock, a crosshair motif in the center of a dial, small Arabic numerals, and a dotted minute track.
