At the SIHH 2017 salon, Baume & Mercier introduced a new member of its exclusive Shelby Cobra collection, which is a fruit of its partnership with the American racecar maker Shelby. The company is named after its late owner, Carroll Shelby, who was an American automotive designer, racing driver, and entrepreneur. He became famous for the Mustang-based performance cars he made for Ford Motor Company, the famous Shelby Mustangs.
The high-performance Shelby Cobra® collection welcomes a new member, which is, this time, inspired by Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, the most iconic car in American motorsport. The legendary vehicle, designed by the eminent automotive and trailer designer, Peter Brock, was built according to the same philosophy that Baume & Mercier follows for no less than 187 years. In the words of the famous designer: “Function first, aesthetics second. Make the shape work. Then make it look beautiful. Light and fast.”
In celebration of the Daytona’s legacy, Peter Brock personally joined with Baume & Mercier and Design Director Alexandre Peraldi to create a collection of Clifton Club Shelby Cobra Limited Edition Chronographs, now for the first time ever within the Clifton range. The Daytona’s aerodynamic shape replicated in sweeping lines forged in a 44mm diameter case in polished/satin-finished steel and titanium. The sun satin-finished dial, created by Brock himself, evokes the Shelby racing stripes and the Daytona Coupe’s livery, with a choice of half Daytona blue/half silver-colored.
The dial is completed with Arabic numerals, horizontal ring chronograph counters, highlighted by a tachymeter scale for speed measurements, and special hours and minutes hands that recall the steering wheel with Superluminova C1 blue emission. The red chronograph second hand features the miniaturized Cobra logo, designed by Peter Brock to mark the Shelby brand.
The functions of the watch are powered by a Swiss-made manufacture self-winding movement (La Joux-Perret 8147-2) with the flyback chronograph function. The pushers, placed on each side of the crown to control chronograph functions, are designed like Daytona Coupe’s foot pedals. The automatic movement is mounted on 27 rubies, and it operates at a frequency of 28800 vibrations per hour, promising around 42 hours of power reserve. On the case-back, the Daytona Coupe’s magnesium alloy wheel design is perfectly replicated on the oscillating weight visible through the sapphire crystal window.
The Clifton Club Shelby Cobra Limited Edition, reference CSX2299, is delivered on a blue “all roads" calfskin strap embossed with a carbon-like pattern strap. In recognition of the speed record achieved by the Daytona at Le Mans in 1964, only 196 pieces of this exclusive watch will ever be produced. The watch is presented in a special black and silver box, together with a collectible 1:43 scale model of the original car, a card signed by Brock, and a custom brochure describing the history of the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. The price is $7,950.
