On the occasion of the BaselWorld trade show, the house of Christophe Claret introduced three new models, including two new variations of the X-TREM-1 model.
From 2016, the avant-garde X-Trem-1 will also be available in damascened steel combined with white or 5N red gold. This exotic, high-end timepiece of truly contemporary design shows hours and minutes by means of two spheres controlled by magnetic fields. The X-TREM-1 timepiece was first introduced four years ago. This year, the famous manufacturer from Le Locale reveals two new versions, both in damascened steel, and both offered in a strictly limited edition of only 8 pieces. In this way, Christophe Claret joins the most innovative and modern design with ancestral methods of toughening steel. Damascus steel, named after Damascus, the capital city of Syria, was a used for manufacturing blades in the Near East. The original method of producing Damascus steel is not known…
The X-TREM-1 is an exceptional timepiece fitted with a flying tourbillon inclined at a 30° angle and mounted on double ceramic bearings, in order to make it even more clearly visible to the wearer. The tourbillon is displayed through a sapphire window on the lower part of the watch face. The movement, caliber FLY11 features a three-dimensional curvex titanium mainplate, and features a completely original retrograde hours and minutes display system. The time is indicated via two small hollowed steel sapphires, captured within transparent sapphire tubes on left and right side of the case-band. The magnetic fields are used to create the illusion steel sapphires move up and down, thus creating mystery hands effect. There is no mechanical connection between the indications and the movement, whatsoever.

Now you're starting to realize how extraordinary this watch is! Christophe Claret actually introduced a magnetic field, the main enemy of mechanical movements, into the very heart of the watch! Magnetic fields have been a watch's worst enemy for as long as mechanical watches have been around, but it seems that Christophe Claret managed to tame these invisible forces, and even make use of them. The secret of its success lies in special two miniature magnets that are suspended in surgical silk threads and moved by cables. The cables are made from hundreds of Dyneema nanofibers contained within an ultra-high-strength polyethylene gel, capable of withstanding tensile forces of up to a kilo. The entire thread is thinner than a human hair, and it measures 4 hundredths of a mm in diameter.

The manually wound movement of the X-TREM-1 model is assembled from 419 individual components. The watch boasts two mainspring barrels, one for the escapement and one for the gear train. The movement beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, and provides at least 50 hours of power reserve. Winding and time-setting is performed via lift-out rotating “bows” on case-back.

Christophe Claret X-TREM-1 timepiece measures 40.80 x 56.80 x 15 mm in dimensions, and it is water resistant to up to 30 meters. The white gold and damascened steel version with time indication in black ceramic (reference MTR.FLY11.130-138) is priced at 272,000 CHF (ex VAT). The watch made of 5N red gold and damascened steel with time indication in 5N red gold or black ceramic (reference number FLY11.140-148) is priced at 268,000 CHF (ex VAT). It doesn’t make a noise, like an alarm function, but instead it acts as a visual reminder to the wearer. The stone is placed inside of the small cone at 4 o’clock, but the wear can set it to a certain time usi...
