During the SIHH 2017 in Geneva, Greubel Forsey unveiled the latest addition to its Art Piece collection, the new Greubel Forsey Art Piece 2, Edition 2, a watch that offers an original way of contemplating the passing of time. If you look at the picture below, you’ll notice that there is no obvious way to read the time from this dial. The lack of hour and minutes indicator is immediately noticeable, and those large Arabic numerals are, obviously, dedicated to the power reserve indicator.
But, now, take another look. Do you notice that strange sub-dial at 5 o’clock position? This is, actually, what you are looking for – a discrete, secret indicator hidden underneath a mobile shutter that can be opened or closed with the pusher located just below the winding crown.
When the aperture is opened, the hours and minutes, indicated by two vibrant red triangles, are revealed on a bright white disc. When the aperture is closed, all that remains is a glorious angled tourbillon, and an oversized power reserve indicator. The message is simple but easily overlooked: it is not the current time that we contemplate, but the time remaining.
If you’re looking for Greubel Forsey’s signature nano-sculpture, which was before present on every watch of the Art Piece series, you won’t be able to find one. This is the first Art Piece that doesn’t include the miniature sculpture that can only be seen using magnifying lenses.
The 72-hour power reserve indicator features extremely large, irregular numerals and a long, needle-type hand, while the majestic double tourbillon dominates the upper portion of the dial. Angled at 30 degrees, the outer tourbillon makes one full rotation in four minutes, while the inner one completes one rotation in 60 seconds. The complication can also be admired through the caseback’s see-through sapphire crystal window, where it appears embraced by the movement’s frosted bridges adorned with Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey’s signatures.
The hand-wound movement is assembled from 412 parts, 130 of which are only for the tourbillon. Mounted on 35 olive-domed jewels in gold chatons, the movement beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. Thanks to the two series-coupled fast-rotating barrels, it offers a minimum of 72 hours of power reserve.
This new Greubel Forsey Art Piece 2, Edition 2 timepiece will be realized in a limited edition of only a few pieces per year. The watch is crafted from white gold, and it measures 44 mm in width, and 16,18 in thickness. The price is yet to be announced, but we are expecting beauty to be somewhere around half million dollar.
