The house of Hermes, a French manufacturer established in 1837, has recently presented its new timepiece inspired by its harness- and saddle-making origins – the Faubourg Machete Joaillerie
The artisans working in the workshops of the house have combined leather craft and jewelry making to create a new range of colorful, luxurious pieces.
The Hermes Faubourg watch was first introduced two years ago, in 2014, as the smallest timepiece ever produced by the Maison. With a diameter of just 15.5mm, the Faubourg timepiece soon became a new symbol of style and refinement. In 2015, the Faubourg watch was decked out in leather to become the Manchette, thus paying a tribute to Hermes’s history. The Hermes Faubourg Machete retained its miniature proportions, but it was now covered in the finest alligator leather or calfskin, to mold around the wrist like a second skin. On the occasion of the BaselWorld 2016, the model was, for the first time ever, unveiled in a luxurious Joaillerie version, and graced with diamonds, emeralds, blue or brown sapphires.
The cutting artisans have carved out from a piece of leather to make a cuff strap, and assembled the elements using the famous saddle-stitching technique. There are three double stitches at each end of the seam, which gives it a distinctive robust finish. In accordance to the traditional techniques, the artisan rubs down the sharp edges of the leather strap before pressing a furrow between the seam and the edge of the leather. The strap contour is dyed and then heat-smoothed with a soldering iron, before beeswax is applied to ensure waterproofness.
The gem-setters and stone-cutters have hand-picked each stone and carved it with inestimable precession. The stones have been fitted in their settings hollowed out in the bezel, before pushing the material back around them, and hammering until the stones are securely held in place. In a final step, the bezel is polished to highlight the luxurious aura of the composition.
The round shape of Hermes Faubourg Manchette Joaillerie Timepiece is made of rose gold, and it measures 19,5mm in diameter. The cases are set with 36 baguette-cut stones, either emeralds, blue sapphires, brown sapphires, or diamonds. There are four dials to choose from, each adorned with four white diamonds: malachite dial, lapis lazuli dial, tiger’s eye dial, or onyx dial. The color of the dial harmonizes with the color of the stones and the strap.
Hermes Faubourg Manchette Joaillerie watches are powered by Swiss-made Quartz movements, and they offer indications for hours and minutes. The watches are water resistant to 30 meters.
