For BaselWorld 2015, Hublot unveils three new Big Bang Models, including the very special Haute Joaillerie series.
In 2015, Hublot celebrates the 10th anniversary of its iconic Big Bang model. To mark the occasion, the brand has unveiled three new anniversary models: the Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold, the Big Bang Tourbillon 5-day Power reserve Indicator Full Magic Gold, and the Big Bang Unico "10 years" Haute Joaillerie. I have already introduced the Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold, and now let’s take a closer look at the diamond-set Big Bang watches, each housing the proprietary Hublot Unico movement.
The original Big Bang was redesigned back in 2013, when the brand introduced its first in-house mechanism, a column wheel chronograph with a double clutch visible on the dial side. The introduction of the famous UNICO led to both technical and aesthetic changes in Big Bang’s design. The screws, push-buttons, crown, indices, numerals and counters, all underwent changes, while retaining the unique recognizable Hublot elements.
The exceptional and unique 10th anniversary Haute Joaillerie collection, includes no less than 10 watches, each priced at $1 million! To create this special series, Hublot has used three of the most complex gem-setting techniques: invisible setting, Clou de Paris setting, and rail setting. Invisible setting uses a metal framework on which the diamonds are mounted. The stones have small grooves in which the framework’s rails fit, so that it seems as if they were held by nothing. The Clou de Paris setting implies the formation of tiny pyramidal shapes, while the rail setting indicates that the stones are held in place with a rail of metal on either side of the diamond.
The full black diamond version of the celebratory Big Bang Unico Haute Joaillerie features 653 black baguette diamonds of 41.84 carats. The full white diamond version is set with 653 baguette diamonds totaling 40.02 carats. The blue sapphire version features 653 baguette diamonds and blue baguette sapphires totaling 40.41 carats, while the ruby version incorporates 653 baguette diamonds and baguette rubies totaling 40.93 carats.
The collection brings one interesting aesthetic innovation from Hublot. For the first time ever, the bezel is set with invisible inverted trapeziums, and there is no material between the baguettes to keep them in place. On each piece, the color of the flange reflects the color of the indices and the strap push pieces. The counter surrounding the dial is also stone-set, which is yet another first for Hublot. The complete dial is lit with 62 baguettes. The piece features a total of 132 baguettes with invisible setting, 127 set on a rail and 394 with a Clou de Paris setting. The piece is completed by a black alligator strap, with deployant buckle in white gold, set with 33 black or white baguette diamonds.
The watches are powered by the HUB 1242 UNICO movement, which is developed and manufactured in-house. This is the automatic chronograph movement with column wheel and double clutch visible on the dial side. The movement promises around 72 hours of power reserve, and approximately 30 meters of water resistance. Each of these watches is made of white gold and it measures 45mm in diameter. The black diamonds version is coated in black.
