Laurent Ferrier wins the men’s complication watch prize at this year’s GPHG awards for the amazing Galet Annual Calendar School Piece. The model, which was officially unveiled at the SIHH 2018, is the Maison’s 5th exclusive caliber featuring an Annual Calendar function. Entirely designed in-house, the Galet Annual Calendar School Piece is a user-friendly watch of great visual balance and pure design. At the same time, this is a high-performance timepiece featuring a practical astronomical complication that indicates the complete date while taking account of variable durations of months, requiring only one manual adjustment at the end of February.
This highly elegant watch is housed in a round Montre Ecole (School Piece) case of a pure, vintage design, measuring 40mm in diameter and 12.80 in thickness. It features a round central case with straight lugs, adorned with two brushed lines on the sides. The watch is available in a choice of several materials, including steel, white gold, and a new “pale” or “sand” gold, evoking the look of antique gold or 1N gold. Unlike 1N golds, which are typically 14 carat, the alloy used by Laurent Ferrier is 18-carat yellow gold with a high inclusion of palladium.
To complement the vintage look of the case, Laurent Ferrier has opted for a silver-toned or slate-gray dial with vintage-inspired numerals painted in blue and two zones with vertically-brushed central area and a circular-brushed hour ring. The time is indicated by a pair of Assegai-sha ped hands, with the rest of the indications aligned on the 12-to-6 axis. The day and month windows appear at 12 o’clock position, mirrored by a small seconds counter at 6 o’clock. The date is indicated by a dedicated red hand that traces blue Arabic numerals on the periphery of the dial.
The model comes with a brand new movement, which can be admired through a sapphire case-back. In addition to the Côtes de Genève motif with a ruthenium treatment adorning the bridges and the circular-graining of the mainplate, the sides and interior angles are manually chamfered and the screw heads are polished. The manual-winding mechanical movement beats at a frequency of 21600 vibrations per hour, offering at least 80 hours of power reserve. In addition to hours, minutes, seconds, and annual calendar functions, it also features a power reserve indicator positioned on the movement side.
The Laurent Ferrier Galet Annual Calendar School Piece, reference LCF025, retails at CHF 55,000 (for the gold versions) or CHF 50,000 (for the steel versions). Limited to 50 pieces in total. More information at laurentferrier.com.
