Parmigiani Fleurier Toric Hémisphères Rétrograde

Marina Milojević | 08.06.17 | 11:53 PM

Parmigiani Fleurier adds the new GMT complication to its iconic Toric collection. It was a restored timepiece that inspired the famous Swiss watchmaker to create this ultimate traveler’s timepiece. The watch is inspired by a historical pocket watch housing two separate movements – each responsible for its own time zone. Michel Parmigiani, who established the Parmigiani Fleurier manufacture in 1996, found an elegant solution to simplify this function, by constructing a single caliber that controls two time zones. The Tonda Hémisphères, which was a world first GMT watch of this kind, was launched in 2010. In 2017, the brand is extending this exceptional movement to the Toric collection, offering a new retrograde timepiece targeted at frequent travelers.

What makes the new Toric Hémisphères Rétrograde quite unique is its ability to display two time zones on the main dial, each accurate to the nearest minute. The local time, at the wearer’s current location, is displayed using the central hands, while a second time zone is shown in a large sub-dial at 12 o’clock. The times are set independently by two crowns, meaning that each of them can be adjusted with absolute precision, even if the times vary by half-hours, rather than hours.

The main crown at 4 o’clock is used to wind the movement and set the time of the two paired time zones, such as the date. A crown at 2 o’clock is used to fine-tune the second time zone. By pulling it out, the module is disengaged from the movement, and re-engages only when the crown is pressed back. The second time zone sub-dial is intersected by a day-night indicator featuring a tiny rhodium-plated hand indicating the time of day on a 24-hour scale divided into black and white sectors (day of night). A second subdial, located at 6 o’clock, features both the small seconds display and the day-night indicator for the local time.

Parmigiani Fleurier Toric Hémisphères Rétrograde is powered by the caliber PF 317 also features an instant retrograde calendar, indicated by the third central hand tipped by a red crescent moon. As the hand travels towards the last day of the month, it activates a spring, which finally releases its force to push the hand back to number 1, representing the first day of the month.

The movement is self-winding and equipped with a double series-mounted barrel, which ensures up to 50 hours of power reserve. Assembled from 316 individual components and 28 jewels, the movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. On the back of the piece, the movement is entirely decorated with Côtes de Genève and circular-grained to the highest Haute Horlogerie standards, including rose gold guilloche oscillating weight.

Parmigiani Fleurier Toric Hémisphères Rétrograde is available with a rose gold case and a grained white dial. The hands of the main time zone are gold-plated and coated with Super-LumiNova to ensure perfect legibility in all light conditions. The hands of the second time zone are more discrete and, therefore, rhodium-plated.
