Raymond Weil The Nabucco Cello Tourbillon

Marina Milojević | 04.28.15 | 09:48 AM

Raymond Weil, one of the last independent brands in the Swiss watch industry, introduces a new model to its Nabucco collection - The Nabucco Cello Tourbillon.

The Raymond Weil Nabucco collection was introduced back in 2007. The fully mechanical Nabucco range is named after Giuseppe Verdi’s opera of the same name. Music has always inspired Raymond Weil, and many of the exquisite models of this watchmaker bear reference to the world of music. This year, with the Nabucco Cello Tourbillon, the 39-year-old brand introduces its first tourbillon timepiece. The watch is inspired by Monsieur Weil’s love for music and passion for the cello, thus being the first in the world of haute horlogerie in taking its design cues directly from this musical instrument.

Raymond Weil The Nabucco Cello Tourbillon

As Raymond Weil’s CEO Elie Bernheim explains: "My grandfather's lifelong love of music combined with my own passion for the cello are the two elements that inspired us to design and develop the Nabucco Cello Tourbillon, which is intended as an expression of our brand's imaginative approach to watch design… The Nabucco Cello Tourbillion reflects many of our brand's core values, notably by being entirely inspired by music and by featuring a number of haute horlogerie finishes. The result is a timepiece that is utterly unique.”

Both sides of the watch are fitted with a sapphire crystal, to reveal the tourbillon movement and its bridges that are shaped like the instrument's distinctive f-holes. The hands, which are visible on the dial side, are sculpted in the shape of a cello bow, while the five lines of a musical stave are embodied in the grooved bezel. Tiny strings have been stretched between the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions, to create an illusion of the instrument. Even though the mechanical manual-winding movement (RW1842) is purchased from a supplier, all of its remarkable musical elements were conceived entirely in-house.

The Nabucco Cello Tourbillon by Raymond Weil comes in a large 46mm diameter case, made of steel and titanium. The sides of the black PVD-coated watch are decorated with carbon fiber inserts, while a genuine crocodile leather bracelet holds the watch on the wrist. The movement that beats on the inside is mounted on 27 jewels, and it promises about 105 hours of power reserve. According to the press release, the watch is water resistant to 200 meters, which makes it suitable for the professional marine activity, serious surface water sports and skin diving.
