Richard Mille presents two limited edition Felipe Massa Watches – the RM 056 and RM 011
Felipe Massa is certainly one of the most longstanding ambassadors of Richard Mille watches. Ever since 2004, tee famous Formula 1 driver has participated in every F1 Grand Prix wearing a Richard Mille watch on his wrist. This year, the Swiss watchmaker celebrates the 10th anniversary of the collaboration between Richard Mille and Felipe Massa with a special collection of RM 056 and RM 011 timepieces dedicated to a Brazilian Formula One racing driver who currently drives for Williams.
During 10 years of collaboration, Felipe Massa has been putting numerous Richard Mille watches on test, including some of the brand’s most renowned models, such as the RM 011 and RM 056. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary, Richard Mille revisits both of these models in Felipe Massa’s racing colors – yellow and blue.
The Richard Mille RM 056 tourbillon unites the brand’s most exciting innovations. The grade 5 titanium caliber is imposed of more than 500 individual components and brings one of the most exquisite complications: a split-second chronograph. The movement also features the power reserve indication, a torque, and a function selector. The torque indicator optimizes the chronometric functioning of the movement by supplying information about the mainspring tension, thus preventing the risk of over-winding.
The function selector is inspired by the car’s gearbox, allowing the wearer to see the winding, neutral and hand-setting positions as the crown is pulled out. Each position is indicated via the red hand at 4 o’clock. The movement itself is inspired by the tourbillon caliber with split-seconds chronograph from the RM008, released in 2004. The RM 056 is 20% lighter, and it weighs less than 10 grams. This is accomplished by reworking over 400 individual components of the original movement, and optimizing it to the maximum.
The Richard Mille RM 056 Felipe Massa 10th anniversary edition comes in a sapphire case, which represents a challenge on its own. Machining sapphire is an extremely complicated procedure, which, in this case, required more than 1000 hours of work for each case. That is 430 hours of filing and 350 hours of polishing the bezel, case middle, and case-back ensemble. Therefore, this version of Felipe Massa 10th anniversary timepiece comes in an exceptionally small limited edition of only 10 exemplars.
The Richard Mille RM 011 Felipe Massa is the second piece in the 10th anniversary collection. The watch is powered by the RMAC manual winding mechanical movement, which is the brand's first flyback chronograph. The pusher, located between 4 and 5 o'clock, enables the wearer to reset the running chronograph without interrupting the mechanism. The pusher between 1 and 2 o'clock serves to start or stop the chronograph function, while the flyback function allows continuous reset at will.
The caliber is made entirely from grade 5 titanium, and it is hand-decorated in the spirit of haute horlogerie. The caliber features an annual calendar, a 60-minute flyback chronograph, and a countdown function. In addition, the watch features a semi-instantaneous month display with Arabic numerals, which is placed between 4 and 5 o’clock.
The watch comes in a NTPT carbon case, which is Richard Mille’s proprietary material. This exclusive type of carbon is distinguished by its extremely regular surface undulations, due to multiple layers (each with a maximum thickness of 30 microns) of parallel filaments obtained by dividing carbon fibers. The dial reveals a couple of subtle changes of the emblematic RM 011. For example, Felipe Massa’s race number 19 has been incorporated into the design instead of the number 12 on the sapphire dial. In addition, Felipe Massa’s signature is engraved on the sapphire crystal case-back. The Richard Mille RM Felipe Massa is available in a limited edition of 100 pieces.
