On the occasion of the SIHH 2018 watch salon, Swiss watchmaker Richard Mille unveiled its latest creation, a fruit of collaboration with Pablo Mac Donough, one of the world’s best professional polo players. The Argentinian champion and the famous watchmaker have joined their forces to create a sporty and dynamic timepiece equipped with a suspended tourbillon caliber, which is fully visible through the laminated sapphire class of its Carbon TPT case.
The new Richard Mille RM 53-01 Tourbillon is designed to withstand extreme shocks and violent blows that commonly occur during the polo game, but without compromising the beauty of its design.
“Polo is a dangerous sport, and hard knocks are a regular occurrence. It’s a very elegant game, but also a contact sport,” explains Richard Mille. “Given that Pablo has sustained a large number of fractures in the course of his career, I asked our teams to come up with a watch that could resist the many types of shocks arising in a polo match, whilst leaving the movement visible.”
To make this possible, Richard Mille turned to Settler, a world-famous sapphire specialist – to create a special kind of glass that would provide the necessary resistance against breaking. Together they came up with a laminated glass, composed of two sheets of sapphire crystal separated by a thin Polyvinyl film. In case of a violent impact, the glass will crack, but without shattering, thus preserving the movement from damage. The innovative concept is a horological first, and patented exclusively to Richard Mille.
The case of the watch is made in Carbon TPT, which makes it literally indestructible and resistant to micro-cracks and tears. Thanks to the flat layers of the NTPT carbon and TPT Quartz the case features a distinctive damascene appearance that recalls Damascus steel.
The delicacy of the tourbillon movement is protected from shocks using a cable-suspended architecture. The atypical solution includes two separate baseplates: the peripheral baseplate fixed to the case to support the tensioner mechanisms, and the second, known as the central baseplate, linked to the first one by cables and incorporating the by cables and incorporating the wheels comprising the caliber as well as the winding mechanism.
The central base-plate sits on two on two braided steel cables just 0.27mm thick, anchored by 4 tensioners. The watchmaker is responsible for tensioning the cables by rotating a spline screw located at the center of each tensioner to ensure even distribution of the tension and thus a perfect balance of the whole mechanism. The manually wound caliber RM 53-01 beats at a frequency of 21,600 vph and has a power reserve of 70 hours.
